I have read this new book a couple of times and will read it again! I love its emphasis on "being" rather than "doing", which is the essence of our whole lives, not just the love-making part, and that is the point of the book. An important book

This is a very clear, concise, and well-researched analysis of the Robert Pickton trial (Canada) and the media frenzy surrounding it. It offers a smart, thoughtful, and critical response to those who wish to see the violence against poor and Aboriginal women in Vancouver as the work of one psycho-killer. The author offers a damning critique of the interlocking network of police, the provincial government, the media and the increasing dangers of neoliberal trajectories that produced an easy-to-digest understanding of the disappearance and murder of at least 60 women. A great book for anyone interested in:

- critically thinking about the news
- the relationship between media, law, and ideology
- anti-colonial critiques of law
- sex-work laws in Canada
- representations of sex-workers

I use it in a course I teach on 'Media Representations of the Urban' but it is certainly not just for students!

Star Trek fans will delight in identifying "obscure" references to episodes and characters from the TV series: they will cheer not only the rapacious Q from The Next Generation but also Trelane (the eponymous "Squire of Gothos" from The Original Series). The story involves the Enterprise crew through three alternative timelines with, of course, The Fate of the Universe hanging in the balance. David ( Imzadi ) limns a Trek-enamored multiverse in which Tasha Yar's "bad haircut" is as important as the massacre of Klingons at Narendra Three. The novel is fast-paced and the prose sloppy. Characters from the first two TV series appear exactly as they were: David scrupulously adds nothing to extant characterizations as he juggles several subplots and intrigues. Certain to delight the converted are appearances by Jack Crusher and all the myriad Wesleys, among others, as well as relationships between Beverly and Picard, Troi and Riker. While the pulpy action makes this is a Trek-lovers paradise, anyone else will wonder what all the fuss is about.

A complicated Star Trek: The Next Generation novel that springs from a TV episode of the old series, in which Captain Kirk is held captive to the whims of a little boy named Trelane, the son of gods from the Q Continuum. The character Q from The Next Generation series is his guardian. Trelane gets out of hand in his adolescence, scattering pieces of Q throughout time and inventing a machine in which all the dimensions of the universe chaotically intersect. He continues the campaign begun in his childhood, to play with human beings as toys, by collapsing three parallel Enterprises into one. A madhouse ensues, with such quick cuts between scenes that overlapping, slightly different Worfs and Tasha Yars and Will Rikers, all bent on killing or rescuing one another, bring to mind a Marx brothers movie. The most intriguing of these alternative plot lines involves Beverly Crusher's long-dead husband, Jack, who is captain of the Enterprise; Picard is his disgraced second-in-command. In this "reality," Jack, and Beverly's son, Wesley, is dead, and Picard and Beverly are having an affair, until Trelane informs Jack, and he explodes in rage, murdering Beverly and killing himself. Purists may not enjoy the fact that every crew member on every "track" is helpless before Trelane, although the correct Picard, with the aid of a restored Q, eventually saves the universe by turning on Trelane as if he were a spoiled child. It Was Just "Okay"

As far as a science fiction tale goes, this one was just okay – this one had way too much dialogue, and the Trelane character, combined with Captain Kirk, Picard, Q, etc. seemed as if the author was really trying too hard to bring in not only TNG characters but rope in the fans of the original series. Without having a spoiler, the Trelane character was more obnoxious than he was menacing. Star Trek fans should really like this one as it revisits a lot of their favorite characters but science fiction fans will feel a little bit of a letdown: I did.

I originally picked this up for $1.99 during a Kindle Daily Deal vs. its normal price of $7.99: at $7.99 it would have been a disaster. If you’re more into science fiction vs. TNG, I would give this one a pass at that price.

This is a doubly abridged audiobook

Eleven bucks for an abridged version of an abridged version ( barely 2 hours). The web page that I have on my phone did not show how short this thing is. Further it appears that Amazon/Audible combined the reviews for all formats of this story, which is misleading.

Arguably the Greatest Star Trek Tie in Novel Ever

This is arguably the great Star Trek Novel ever written. It takes place on a grand scale, covering several interesting timelines, then smashing them together.

The real test for novels like these are if the characters sounds like they should...quite often tie in novels will have characters saying things that they never would on the show, which can really pull me out of the book. Thankfully that isn't a problem here. Peter David has an excellent grasp of what makes each of these characters tick. The many references to past Star Trek adventures just serve to sweeten the deal for Star Trek fans.

The Kindle edition is pretty good. I only noticed about a dozen typos, but none were so bad that I couldn't figure out what the actual intended word was. I don't have the paper version to compare it to, so this issue might just be the way the book is written, but within chapters, it can be difficult to spot the perspective changes. Rather than leaving an extra space between paragraphs to denote a chance in perspective/location, the next section just starts immediately after the previous sentence. Sometimes that seems intentional (a joke carries over between sections, characters seem to react to something someone else in another area said, etc.), but other times it just makes it confusing.

Overall I love this book. It was one of the first books I picked up for my kindle, because I wanted to re-read it (I had originally read it many years ago). The only real problem is that this is as good as it gets. It piques the appetite for more books like this, but no other Star Trek novel matches it. Peter David's other Star Trek novels are great (Vendetta, Imzadi, etc.), but this is his best.

Gr 6-10–A great line-up of authors including Alane Ferguson, Heather Brewer, and Peg Kehret contribute tales that are sure to amuse readers, but not necessarily scare them. The selections include vampires, werewolves, weird little children, jokes gone wrong, and a cannibalistic family who like to prey on new babysitters. The stories are entertaining, but most of them are pretty tame. One standout is Meg Cabot's “The Night Hunter,” a tale about a girl kidnapped by a bank robber wearing a clown mask who ultimately hopes to be rescued by the folk hero The Night Hunter, immortalized in a pop song. Jennifer Allison's “The Perfects” is the one tale in the bunch that is actually creepy and will leave readers with an uneasy feeling at the end. All of the stories are perfect for reading around a campfire or at a slumber party without causing too many sleepless moments. Stine’s name on the spine may promise things that go bump in the night, but scary stories are only part of what this schizophrenic collection offers: mystery, thriller, sci-fi, light paranormal, humor, and even superhero sagas all take their turns. There are more uninspired entries here than one would like (do we really need another vampire-versus-werewolf battle?), but this collection does one thing very well: it keeps the reading level consistent, which makes it a good entry point for reluctant readers moving on from Stine’s own oeuvre. By far the best story is Walter Sorrells’ “Tuition,” a surprise-after-surprise roller-coaster ride in which a teen safecracker celebrates a very unusual birthday. Also worthy of note is “Suckers,” by Suzanne Weyn, which features an ending Rod Serling would’ve died for, and “Piney Power,” about a family of backwoods misfits who enact their own special brand of justice. These three tales are plenty good enough to propel readers past slower patches. Grades 7-10. --Daniel Kraus

I bought this book for my 11 year old son. He is trying to get out of the goosebumps stage. I went by online reviews and thought it woukd be okay for him. After reading a couple of the stories I can tell you its probably more for 13 and up. A couple of the stories were a little gory to my liking. He didnt seem to mind though.

Great anthology with a lot of variety!

I was a little uneasy, buying this book. Some of Stine's post-Goosebumps (original series) books have disappointed me, but I love good ghost stories so I gave this a try.

I'm very happy with "Fear." The stories feature a lot of variety, and everything from "good scares" to "gotcha" endings that made me laugh out loud.

In general, this book didn't skimp on the "eeeuuuuwww!" factor, but it didn't make my stomach lurch, either. So, for me, it was a Goldilocks book ("just right!").

If you want a fun book to read at night when the moon is full and the wind makes the house creak, this is a good choice.

I loved R.L. Stine growing up! So as a adult I decided to travel down memory lane and read one of his books again!! Very good book!! Each story was different!! Some made me want to look in the closet and under the bed!
