Simple recipes that extremely disappointed me but not my boyfriend

I had high hopes for this Christmas cookie book but I'm extremely disappointed.

My first mistake is that I did not realize this book was by Betty Crocker before I selected it. This means practically all (about 80%) of the recipes require using one of their products such as:
- Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix
- Betty Crocker chocolate chunk cookie mix
- Betty Crocker peanut butter cookie mix
- Betty Crocker Gluten-Free chocolate chip cookie mix
- Original Bisquick mix
- Bisquick Gluten-Free mix
- various containers of frosting
- etc.

Second, the two recipes I did try were the ones that did not require their product. However, those recipes were not tasty at all. First I made the Raspberry-Pistachio Thumbprints. I followed the recipe precisely. Even though there was a full cup of butter in the recipe, the dough came out crumbly and dry. It was difficult to keep the cookie from falling apart on the cookie sheet. However, they did bake out almost like the picture (all pictures are black and white, by the way) except mine were not as round. I then added the jam after the cookies cooled. I substituted a flavor of jam I would like, which the recipe suggested. However, the only thing good about the cookie was the jam. It had no taste to me and I plan on throwing them out unless I can get my boyfriend to eat them.

Next I made the Cherry-Topped Chocolate Tassies. Once again the dough appeared very dry but it did mold very well. The tassies baked up exactly like the picture. I felt like I was doing surgery to get them out of the mini-cupcake pan because they are very delicate as the recipe says. After they cooled, I tried two. I tried one that was just cooled and another that was refrigerated a while. Once again, I didn't like them. The chocolate filling and cherry was tasty but the dough tasted awful to me just like the dough in the above recipe. They are very pretty though and a bit more eatable. I think I can get my boyfriend to eat these without complaint although I might just eat the innards and throw away that crust.

I was going to give this book one star but I bumped it up to two stars because it's not Betty Crocker's fault that I selected a book that requires brand name store bought products. However, I'm extremely disappointed in the recipes I tried.

The good points of the book are as follows:
- the recipes are easy to make
- most recipes require few ingredients
- the end results are pretty (at least both of mine were)
- there are some good baking tips in the book
- calorie and nutrition information accompanies each recipe

Since I did recieve a pre-release copy of this book, there are a few editing or printing mistakes and one weird example for a cookie book that mentions "3 to 3-1/2 pound whole chicken" in the calculation of nutrition section. In my opinion, they need to use a pastry example for this.

Unfortunately, this book is going into the recycling pile. However, for those who like quick recipes which use brand name ingredients, look pretty, and appeal to those who care least about taste, then this book may be for you. I am use to baking from scratch with the freshest ingredients. Many people have raved about items I've baked previously; however, the two recipes I tried are not the quality I am use to.

Sept 1, 2013 UPDATE: I had my boyfriend try both of the cookies I made and he LOVES them. He gives them 5 stars both for taste and presentation. His favorite was the Raspberry-Pistachio Thumbprints (the ones I absolutely hated) and then the Cherry-Topped Chocolate Tassies (which I also did not like, but liked better than the thumbprints). The cookie part of each one reminds me of the Walker's butter cookies so I asked him if they reminded him of those and he said yes. This explains why I can't stand the cookies and he loves them. The cookie part taste similar to Walkers Pure Butter Shortbread Robert Burns Tin (Assorted), 10.6-Ounce.

Since I had a lot of cookies, I also shared some with another friend who loves Walker's shortbread cookies. She said the Cherry-Topped Chocolate Tassies were too sweet for her and would rate them 3 stars but the Raspberry-Pistachio Thumbprints were 5 stars to her. She also shared the cookies with two other friends and one friend said the following about the thumbprints (and I quote) "Oh my goodness it was to die for!!! May I have the recipe?" She also titled her email to me "Your cookies were amazing!" Since she was not a chocolate person, she did not rate the tassies but the title still says a lot.

In summary, it appears if you like shortbread / butter cookies, you'll like these two recipes at least. Since this is my review and how I liked the cookies and the book, this book is 2 stars to me. However, the other 4 people who tried what I made loved the thumbprints the most and the tassies second and, in my opiniion, these 4 people would have rated this book between 4 to 5 stars had they been the reviewer.

Sept. 8, 2013 Update: Last week I had two other people try these cookies and they absolutely loved them. They especially loved the thumbprints but did say both were good. Therefore, I have not found anyone but me who disliked these cookies.

Some very easy and delicious recipes

I ran across this book at my cousin's house. She had just bought it so she could incorporate some fun new recipes into her holiday cookie baking. Thumbing through it, I just loved the pretty pictures and yummy sounding cookies, so I went ahead and purchased one when I was at my local bookstore the following weekend. I have tried out some cookie recipes and not been disappointed. My favorite so far were the Choclate Hazelnut Cookies (it calls for a cup of Nutella- yes please!) What I loved about this cookbook is that many recipes call for packaged cookie mixes as a base- making these cookies simple and afforadable, since the cookie mixes are always on sale around Christmas. I can easily get a batch of cookies done after a long workday when it calls for the cookie mix, since it's simple and quick, so I do enjoy these recipes. Also those recipes that do call for the cookie mixes definitely add enough ingredients to give the cookies a wow factor when finished- whether it be in flavor or in presentation/decoration. Next up for me is some adorable "Jolly snowman faces" cookies for my nephew- also a simple recipe- but with candy decorations that make the cookies fun and eye catching.

So now the negative- the binding of this book is such that pages are going to fall out with prolonged use. I find that to be an issue with many cookbooks- if you lay them flat on the counter to read the recipe eventually the pages start to fall out. Also, you can find many of the recipes (including my favorite Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies) right on the Betty Crocker website, so it's not exactly necessary to buy this book. I have searched a few recipes from this cookbook and actually ALL the ones I have looked for so far have been on there. But it IS a very pretty book (it would make a lovely gift for an avid baker) and many recipes are delicious, so it's definitely not a waste.

Tried and True - Super Easy Too

These cookies are excellent any time of the year. What BC has done here is brought us some of their most popular recipes in a more festive theme. Although it says cookies, it's really much much more than that. Included are cupcakes, tassies and bars. I think the bar recipes really shine because there are some really thinking out of the box style recipes. Such as the Baklava Bars. They are not only visually beautiful, but if you enjoy lots of nuts this is delicious. The recipes ues walnuts, but you can easily use pistachio or almonds if you like.

Some of the recipes rely on a BC mix, such as the sugar cookie mix to make it easy for those who want a semi homemade approach. There are also completely by scratch recipes as well. For those with gluten intolerances there are even a few recipes using their gluten free mix as a base. If someone isn't on a gluten free diet, they should still consider the recipe, because many of these gluten free items are just as good and sometimes better than gluten recipes.

There is a color picture for every recipe. Many of the recipes you can make your own as well. The chewy Raspberry Almond Bars are oatmeal based and you can easily swap out the reasberry jam for your favorite flavor. My favorite is the Elegant Almond Bars. However, the almond paste is a bit pricey.

Overall, a beautiful variety of small baked goods, easy enough to make something really good for any event or personal gathering (or just for YOU!)

Too easy

The title boasts that there are 100 solos... There are a hundred but most of them are all just three line easy things that you can get out of a method book. No one would ever need to buy this book because it is only for begginers. If begginers bought it they would use it once and then be too good for it. I reccomend Arban's because they don't call it the trumpet bible for nothing.

Great book to get me back into trumpet playing

I used to play trumpet and was looking to start up again. The music is great for beginners and for trying to relearn how to play. The music selection is great from easy to play to a bit more challenging. I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn for the first time or anyone trying to play the trumpet again.

I haven't read it yet, but it deserves 4 stars for doing this for multiple reasons. One. (1) How is it that one of the coolest medium for making a story fresh and poignant doesn't have a commentary/editorial/investigative book about it? 4 Stars for getting it done.; (2) You have variety. Through the table of contents, I have seen popular European and Asian influences in this medium for a plot.; (3) Many easter eggs in there, that bring be me back and define for me what I couldn't express about why I love time travel; (4) The movie Shawn of the Dead was a respectful parody of the zombie movie sub-genre. They studied and watched and read many resources and create an entertaining synergy of the many aforementioned. This book is a resource for ME an my next time travel story. Thanks Authors.

About the Author
James W. (Jim) Williams was historian at the U.S. Army Aviation Center, 1997?2005. He previously was historian for the Army Chemical Corps and Armor Branch. For seven years he headed oral history programs and taught at the Army War College. His military service included leading Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams during Vietnam, commanding sealift operations during the first Gulf War, and serving as historian for the NATO headquarters in Bosnia. Other assignments included research and development for weapon systems and teaching at the Naval Academy. Indiana University awarded his Ph.D. in history in 1981.

The definitive history of Army Aviation from the beginning to present operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. If you like aviation history this is a wonderful resource. Should be in every library collection. A great gift for anyone interested in aviation.

Lots of detail, lacks a story

This book covers a lot of ground, but suffers a bit from the sheer amount of detail. The organizational changes in Army Aviation are highlighted, and it is useful to know what organizational structures have been implemented at various times, but the cohesiveness of the story is often sidetracked. It is always a struggle to produce an exhaustive history while explaining how these details relate to the bigger picture, so I sympathize with the author.

Unfortunately, it felt as though a large portion of the book was spent slogging through minutiae, and chronological progression was interspersed with thematic progression. I would give the content 4 stars, principally because the applications of aviation in particular engagements was given limited treatment, as were the advances in technology.

I think that the best insight that I found in the book was the discussion of the particular difficulties encountered by the Army in providing for equivalent career development for soldiers in Aviation. In this regard, the author recounted the events as a continuing theme, and developed it into a cohesive story.

I don't think that I could reconcile the desire to document all of the events covered in this book with a cohesive and engaging story without adding at least 50% to its length, so maybe that is the constraint that prevailed.

The readability of the book makes it overall 3 stars in my opinion. As a reference, this book could be useful, but the astounding detail of the book makes the whole volume a giant index, and finding particular discussions requires knowing a priori where to look chronologically and thematically.

Army Aviation as Seen from the Pentagon

This is a history of one part of Army aviation, the part played by the senior officers and as viewed from the Pentagon rather than the cockpit. The author seems more interested in the perspective of the commanders and the senior officers in the Department of Defense and Department of the Army. Of course there are lots of "there I was" combat war story books out there, and this title tells a different story in a very academic way, from a distance, and that could be a good thing. Regretfully, Dr. Williams omits some extremely important events from this book. One of those is the arrival of two H-21 helicopter companies in Viet Nam in November of 1961, the 8th and 57th, and these two companies were soon conducting air assault missions quite like those of today. The important part of that story is that, so far as I can tell, the men of these units invented the air mobility mission, the air assault mission, and they cobbled together ways to put machineguns on their aircraft...without any published doctrine I have yet discovered. The story of these two units and the others that joined them conducting combat air assaults in RVN from 1961 to 1965 is missing from this book, along with so much more. The author seems to have done his research with field-grade commissioned officers; they have one part of the story to tell but a fairly small part of what interests me.

And for such a detailed book, the lack of an index is quite unfortunate.

Not for the easily offended or the purveyors of PC, it forms the third installment in Jenkins's continuing saga of Billy Clyde Puckett, first introduced in Semi-Tough as a star running back whose attitude matched his twinkle-toed unpredictability on and off the field. Now, some two decades later, Billy Clyde's feet may have slowed, but his mouth and his passions haven't. He still loves the game; he's just sick of the way it's gotten soft: "Pass interference (used to be) when you broke a guy's ribs. Today it's excess frowning." His plan is to heal it. He's decided to turn his back on the clich�s that have sustained his life as a broadcaster for "something more important than Hamlet": he will start his own NFL team, the expansion West Texas Tornadoes, and run it the way it should be run. Of course, if he can't exactly set the game right, he will at least set it on its ear with the help of old teammates T.J. Lambert and Shake Tiller--and his father-in-law's fortune.

In this continuing saga of former sportswriter Jenkins's sardonic alter ego and narrator, Billy Clyde Puckett (Semi-Tough, etc.), the former footballer and gadabout sports junkie slips from redneck obstreperousness to fundamentally racist and misogynist stupidity. The plot of this very shaggy, junior-high-school dirty joke centers on Billy Clyde's attempt to use the money of his father-in-law, Big Ed Bookman, to establish an NFL expansion team in the semiarid Texas wasteland between Amarillo and Lubbock. This improbability is of small concern to the book and occupies less than a tenth of its length. Billy Clyde spends most of the time regaling the reader with the mind-numbing back stories of every character?no matter how minor?who crosses his path. Most all of these have three unlikely names or nicknames, none of which is believable or in good taste. Other diversions include a timeline tracing the history of the NFL, lots of babe-ogling in bars and arguments over the stats of yesteryear. Billy Clyde is too much a part of the absurdity to provide a satiric norm or to separate wisecracks from wisdom. In places, Jenkins gets off an amusing zinger or two, but far too much of this overdone but underachieving farce reminds one of a comedian who grows nastier the fewer laughs he gets. Author tour.

Anyone who has read Semi-Tough (LJ 10/15/72) will not be surprised that this book, which continues the adventures of Billy Clyde Puckett, is sexist, racist, redneck, antigay, politically incorrect, and guaranteed to offend virtually every category of human being. It is also rolling-on-the-floor funny. Billy Clyde and his rich father-in-law win one of the NFL expansion franchises, the West Texas Tornadoes, and extravagantly cheat their way to the Super Bowl. Along the way there is plenty of time for comments on Hollywood (Billy's wife is a movie star), corruption in college football (he's in favor of it), cheerleaders, lawyers, developers, and diners in small Texas towns. Public libraries should buy multiple copies; librarians should grab them first for a fun read.

not for the politically correct - all Dan Jenkins stuff from dead solid perfect is "snickerville" - so read em where you won't have someone ask why your laughing . you won't be able to tell em without context and context is really funny.

I've read most of Jenkins books over the years and I've noticed an unfortunate trend - namely, as Jenkins gets older and more curmudgeonly, he feels the need to spend 400 pages proving he can be more of a neanderthal than virtually any other writer working today. I'm sure Dan and many of his more loyal fans would protest that "Rude Behavior" is merely Jenkins' expose on the excesses of political correctness (of which there are many, to be sure). But this book has a "slapped-together to meet a contractual obligation" feel to it. It' is neither the parody nor the satire as one has come to expect from Jenkins. Instead, it is merely a rant about everything in modern society that Dan disapproves of. Jenkins spends so much time trying to force lame jokes onto the page that he seems to have run out of time to include a plot or any sort of character development. And it still takes him 400 pages to take on all the "shirt-lifters," minorities, liberals and others who apparently pose such a threat to Dan's world. In the end there just isn't much "there" there. If you haven't read the earlier books in this series, I suspect you'd have no idea who the hell these characters are supposed to be other than stereotypes of West Texas bigots. Perhaps the time has come for Dan Jenkins to sit back with a young Scotch and a Marlboro and bask in the glow of his earlier, far more successful novels. To continue to cash in on the effort expended on his earlier, better books is simply an embarassment.

Rude Behavior- Yes it is!

If you are not a Dan Jenkins fan or strongly oppose "Archie Bunker" bigotry, this novel may not be for you. Jenkins does however weave an interesting tale of the NFL. Far fetched at times very funny at others Jenkins will leave the reader and avid football fan scratching his head, wondering if this is how the NFL is run.
The novel is a bit lengthy and is slow at the beginning. However Jenkins mixes football (both fictional and historical) with hollywood, social issues and political correctivness. Bring back the cast from "Semi-Tough" was great for the reader, but might of lost the new reader.
The book is not quite as funny as "You Got To Play Hurt", which would be a better buy for the new Jenkins reader. However if you like Dan Jenkins, football and aren't easily offended this one is a must read.

This book changed my life!

The 'Wise Woman' Book changed my life. I was in a troubled marriage, and after our fifth marriage counselor advised separation or divorce, I came upon this material in desperation, hungry to know there was more out there than pending doom. God used this material to open the floodgates of heaven and deliver me and my marriage, and now, four years later, my husband and I are thriving, in a joyful, loving relationship, have openness and intimacy, and have started a ministry to hurting men and women. This book was the catalyst that began our redemption into the awesome relationship we now have! Don't think about it - just buy it!

Radical!!

This book is not for the faint of heart; not for those who want the easy way out. It is for the broken hearted, broken in spirit, those who are at the bottom, in the dark and cold, alone and afraid and see no way out. There IS a way out, and Someone to hold your right hand, to help you thru the agonizing pain of separation and/or divorce. Written by a woman who has been there, it is a very gritty procedural digest of how to win your spouse back, even if they are actively pursuing divorce. Her advice, written in very plain form, very straightforward, is hard to swallow. It IS very radical in nature; but so is the death of a marriage. She speaks not the current trend in marital counseling we find in our churches today; but then, why are we even having to deal with these issues so much in our churches today? Think about it. I believe in her teachings, as I believe her foundation is the Rock of Ages, Jesus Christ. Pray and meditate as you read, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. And as your journey begins (or continues), realize that you don't have to walk alone; that your only Source of Hope is waiting to lead you through the Valley. "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a conrite spirit." (Psalm 34:18 KJV)

Theosophy is not only for the learned; it is for all. Perhaps among those who in these little books catch their first glimpse of its teachings, there may be a few who will be led by them to penetrate more deeply into its philosophy, its science, and its religion, facing its abstruser problems with the student's zeal and the neophyte's ardour. But these Manuals are not written for the eager student, whom no initial difficulties can daunt; they are written for the busy men and women of the work-a-day world, and seek to make plain some of the great truths that render life easier to bear and death easier to face. Written by servants of the Masters who are the Elder Brothers of our race, they can have no other object than to serve our fellow-men.

THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY DISCUSSED LIFE AFTER DEATH

Annie Besant (1847-1933) was once a prominent English atheist orator and writer associated with Charles Bradlaugh in the National Secular Society (see her My Path to Atheism), women's rights activist, early advocate of birth control, and supporter of "Home Rule" in India. In 1890 she met Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, and became a prominent leader of the Theosophical Society. Along with Charles Leadbeater, she was a strong advocate of Jiddu Krishnamurti as the coming "World Teacher"---a role which Krishnamurti repudiated in 1929. She wrote many books, such as Esoteric Christianity, Or The Lesser Mysteries, The Ancient Wisdom, Annie Besant An Autobiography, etc. [NOTE: this review pertains to the 100-page paperback edition.]

She wrote in the Preface to this 1893 book, "this little book... is the third in a series of Manuals designed to meet public demand for a simple exposition of Theosophical teachings. She observes, "it is necessary... to state the constitution of man, as viewed by the Esoteric Philosophy... Man then consists of The Immortal Triad: the Individual [Will, Intuition, Intellect] ... The Perishable Quaternary: the Person [Mind, Desire, Energizing Vitality, Automatic Vitality]." (Pg. 9)

She suggests, "I believe that very much of the antagonism between the adherents of the Esoteric Philosophy and those of Spiritualism has arisen from confusion of terms, and consequent misunderstanding of each other's meaning... A clear definition of terms, and a rigid adherence to them when once adopted, will at least enable us to understand each other, and that is the first step to any fruitful comparision of experiences." (Pg. 13)

She says, "The etheric double is the ethereal counterpart of the gross body of man. It is the double that is sometimes seen during life in the neighbourhood of the body, and its absence from the body is generally marked by the heaviness or semi-lethargy of the latter... its withdrawal from the body is naturally marked by the lowering of all vital functions, even while the cord which unites the two is still unbroken... the snapping of the cord means the death of the body." (Pg. 22)

She asserts, "the Esoteric Philosophy teaches that death cannot touch the higher consciousness of man, and that it can only separate those who love each other so far as their lower vehicles are concerned... When we take the wider sweep of thought demanded by the Esoteric Philosophy, a far more fascinating prospect of persistent love and union between individual Egos rolls itself out before our eyes than was offered to us by the more limited creed of exoteric Christendom... between the Souls there is no separation, though during incarnation they may not realize the fact in its fulness and beauty." (Pg. 74-75)

This book is an interesting introduction to the Theosophical/Esoteric/Occult view of life after death, and related issues.
