Complete & accurate

This is a great book written by experts who have been involved with the breed for decades. This book was a project by the Dalmatian Club of America (DCA), which has been the breed's AKC national parent club since 1905. No stone was left unturned when covering the true nature and essence of the Dalmatian. The book is a large, attractive volume that covers every topic you can think of related to Dals. The book was written in the late '90s & the DCA staff went to great lenghts to get first-hand scientific research rather than just relaying old, outdated thoughts. Absolutely the best book available for all people who love Dalmatians!

This book is worth every penny--and much more! The authors have put together an excellent reference on every topic pertaining to Dalmatians: important kennels and breeders organized by era; health peculiarities of the Dalmatian; showing (including tracking, road trials, obedience, agility and conformation); the history of the Dalmatian Club of America; how to choose a puppy (and whether a Dalmatian is right for you)--and all beautifully and lavishly illustrated with color photographs. This is a definitive guide to the breed.

The book is reasonably comprehensive. The authors have included the dalmation's history, a detail analysis and drawings of judging criteria, and a wonderful section on the animal's nature and traits. Whether you would like to have a friend just to run with, or to own a show dog, this book with it's plentiful color photographs and illustrations is a "must"!

Paul Meier was wonderful. He accidently sent me the wrong version of what I ordered so he sent me the correct one and sent it to me so I could access on line and keep the wrong version! I found out he's a dialect coach and I was terrified I would not be able to learn a Scottish accent for the play I was cast in. I sent him my lines, we set a time and he helped me over Skype. He saved me! I came across very believable. My actor friends laughed hard when they heard my Scottish!

Why I love this book!

I love Standard British English Dialect for several reasons. First, even though I am not an industry professional who needs to master a multitude of dialects, I found the concise and perfectly crafted instructions to be easy to follow and completely effective! I found I was able to amaze myself with regard how little time it required on my part to grasp the concepts of how to incorporate a dialect I previously had no experience with into my speech. Who is this guy sounding so British? He looks just like me!

Second, I think we all know that the size of a book is never indicative of its quality and value. I loved that these very complete techniques were contained within an economical and time saving 26 pages! That is pure mastery, something we should all strive for.

Third, I have had so much fun with this solid dialect training tool that I cannot wait to take on yet another one. Sybil will have nothing on me before I'm done!

Semler, the 34-year-old CEO, or "counselor," of Semco, a Brazilian manufacturing firm, describes how he turned his successful company into a "natural business" in which employees hire and evaluate their bosses, dress however they want, participate in major decisions, and share in 22 percent of the profits. Semler believes that Semco is different from most companies that have participatory management because employees are given the power to make decisions--even ones, with which the CEO wouldn't normally agree. In a sometimes breathless, often boyish manner, Semler, a counselor of a Brazilian company (Semco), relates the transformation of a traditionally structured business into one quite literally without walls and rules. Semler details his not-so-easy steps in the metamorphosis: abolishing dress codes and regulations; decentralizing plants; getting rid of paperwork and titles (hence, his appellation as counselor, not CEO); and creating a consultative democracy in which employees set their own salaries and work hours and vote on managerial candidates, among other responsibilities. If it sounds too much like utopia, Semler admits that Brazil's economic downturn has impacted Semco and that, yes, being born with a silver spoon certainly colors his vision. My Favorite Business Book Ever

I must have bought people 20 copies of this book...at least. This book is the best distillation of what democracy, honesty, transparency and courage look like in the workplace. They produce spectacular financial result and deep fulfillment for the employees. I read this book in 2006 or earlier for the first time and I keep coming back to it over and over again. Although his business is a complex manufacturing business, you can apply the lessons here to small or large companies, sales organizations, restaurants, tech companies and non-profits. The book is radical...and surprisingly revolutionary. It also makes you realize, by describing in such detail what an ultra high trust work environment looks like, how much of our workplaces treat us like dishonest children...and we often fulfill those expectations. I don't say it lightly...but this book was life changing and still in for me...

First 100 pages were great

I really liked the first 1/3 of this book up to page 100. But then past that I was struggling to finish it. I kept pushing myself to read a few more pages with hopes that it would get better. But finally stopped around page 200 and then skimmed through the remainder. The first part was great because it covers the authors story of running the company traditionally and then implementing a lot of the new policies. Which was very thought provoking and pretty amazing considering this was over 25 years ago.

After page 100 each chapter covered a story about hiring someone or moving them to another department. Or implementing something else. And it just became really boring and drawn out for me. And when he writes about subsidizing lunches for workers making less money, and allowing employees to set their own salaries based on things like living expenses it comes across to be a bit socialist leaning. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. On the first page the author writes that it's not purely capitalistic or socialist. He writes that it's a new way. A third way. And it seems like that third way has borrowed tenets from each.

Anyway, This book should be read to challenge your current thinking and to read about a more democratic work environment. Even if you only make it to page 100. It should not be read as a complete guide for a company or as if everything covered is the absolute best way to do things.

I bought this book because I read about Semco and what its boss had created.
From what I heard he had created a workplace that was democratic, fun to work at and all in all a good lesson of how companies can be run. So, when I found out he had written a book about it, I wanted to read it.

And I was not disappointed. He describes clearly and with great detail how he transformed his fathers company from a bureaucratic, top-down run company into a much more democratic and fun workplace. And it all started with allowing employees to vote on which color uniforms they want.

All in all, I love this book. It seems to be part of a new era about working differently from the past. Perhaps era is not the right word, but movement might be a better description. Other elements in this movement are ROWE from Jodi Thompson and Cali Ressler, Beyond Budgeting, Alexander Kjerulf with his Positive Sharing website as being the Chief Happiness Officer, Tim Ferriss with his Four Hour Workweek, the guys from 37signals and many others.

Branden, who has already explored issues of self-esteem in The Psychology of Self-Esteem , LJ 2/1/70, and How To Raise Your Self-Esteem, LJ 3/15/87, argues that acquiring high self-esteem is essential to a person's survival in the world. His core assertions are believable enough , but he does not outline the six pillars until well into the book, which is too late to hook the reader. Ultimately, this is a repetitive, verbose, and somewhat rambling book. Better choices would be Richard Bednar's more scholarly Self-Esteem: Paradoxes and Innovations in Clinical Theory and Practice (American Psychological Assn., 1989) or, for public libraries, Matthew McKay, Self-Esteem (New Harbinger, 1992). Branden practically invented the concept of self-esteem and was probably most responsible for promoting it in this country. His latest book is another solid effort that builds on his previous work. He defines the titular pillars as living consciously, self-acceptance, self-responsibility, self-assertiveness, living purposefully, and personal integrity, and he describes not only their importance but how to practice them. He also looks at self-esteem within the contexts of school, work, psychotherapy, and culture and how to develop it within each. His is a balanced book--part theory, part social commentary, part self-help--that is clear, well researched, and well grounded, a valuable, credible addition to the psychological self-help shelves. Thorough

Nathaniel Branden's work is comprehensive. The book is broken down into 3 Parts:

Part I - Self Esteem Basic Principles. This frames the remainder of the book and gives context to definitions, and what good Self Esteem Produces in a person. Self Esteem consists of Self Efficacy (confindence in the functioning of our mind) and Self Respect....5 STAR

Part II - Internal Sources of Self Esteem. This covers the 6 Pillars of self Esteem; Living Conciously, Self Acceptance, Self Responsibility, Self Assertiveness, Living Purposefully, and Personal Integrity....Excellent information that can be applied directly to the 'self' or taught to others...5 STAR

Part III - External Influences: Self and Others. This covers external things that may influence our 'self' to include schools, work, and culture. This is where your head may begin to crook sideways a bit. The focus of Part III became almost argumentative in nature and veered away from the theme's in Part II. It is almost as if Branden is on a personal agenda to dismantle politics, organized cultures, and especially religion in the name of preserving the 'self'. It is as if his life long work on Self Esteem becomes his religion that he believes should be adopted by industry, schools, and society. A little distracting, but take what applies. However, the piece on Nurturing a Childs Self Esteem in this section is very good....2 STAR.

I recommend the book - many other 'Self Help' books are off-shoots to his core lessons on self esteem. Most social and personal issues can be traced back to self esteem in some way, and after reading this book, you'll really understand this. It was personally beneficial for me and I will apply many of the lessons to my family.

Too Long But Useful

I'm torn between 3 stars and 5 stars. I think I'll go with 3 stays, because the material is amazing but very difficult to get through. I wish it was more clear and concise, so that the reader would get through it quicker and began to practice it in their daily life.

The first half of the book is life changing. I bolted through it in a few hours. It gave me a realization that pulled me out of a 9 month on and off depression. Since reviewing some of the material whenever I feel down, along with other resources, it gave me insight and clarity in my life that has sustained joy in the past 3 months. I hope it continues. The most significant part that brought me to awareness was his quote about his dog, that I have shared with many others. He says his dog is focused on enjoying the outdoors, chasing squirrels and sniffing flowers, not worried at all about being "happier" than the other dogs. I don't know if it impacts others the way it did for me, because it was incredibly applicable to my own situation. I realized the significance and potential of this book to impact my life after reading that, and began taking notes seriously.

The second half of the book, in contrast to the first half... took quite a while to finish. It was dry, convoluted, and many of the same ideas are restated. It's his observations, theories and philosophy, and not really applicable to me. I finished it at last today. Just read the first half where it introduces the concept of self esteem, and MAYBE the last few pages on "The Seventh Pillar" and the appendices.

Eye-opening

As someone who is pretty self-aware but only just now dabbling into my deeper issues (self-esteem being my core struggle), I found this book to be supremely helpful. It offered me a ton of AHA! moments on how I relate to myself and others. It put into perspective that self-esteem isn't the prize at the end of treatment or work -- it's the actual work you do.

Though sometimes the writing style is difficult to understand the first read through (sometimes I have to go back and reread a sentence), I really like how the author compares low self-esteem thinking with what your thinking should be to secure your healthy self-esteem. It's helped me do better personally and professionally.

Palaces is filled with high quality, profesional photographs of unimaginable, lavish, sumptuous interiors created around the world by the designer/author who believes "every man and woman wants to live in their own palace." If you love interior design you will want this book on your coffee table or in your library. When I show Palaces to guests who visit my home, there are always lots of "ooh's and aah's."
