Very cool, lots of great recipes including my all time ...

Very cool, lots of great recipes including my all time favorite Saison Dupont. But because of the way the book was bound, it's some what difficult to hold open, read, and brew all once. Kinkos has a very useful service where they'll cut off the spine, and install a spiral binding for about $7. There's also a pretty useful crash course in the beginning of the book where they teach you how to reverse engineer pretty much any beer. Great book, highly recommend.

not the best of brews

not the best of brews, but some good ones for sure and also an idea on a variety of alternatives to various styles that you may not have thought about. Pretty good info and I do like the way partial mash and all grain approaches are mentioned. Eventhough the way the hop additions are stated it could be a bit confusing at first, so read carefully.

Sloppy editing

I am a big fan of this book, as I am a relatively new home brewer and the many recipes here give me ample examples to select from. I also am learning what ingredients go with what style of beer, so I can create my own. My son-in-law had this book, and I bought an on-line copy so we didn't keep fighting over who got to keep Brian's dog-eared copy. This book was delivered as scheduled. I like the appendices in the book: examples major types of grains (too few, actually) and additives/specialty grains. The hops table that provides some alternatives to hops in case of missing items is especially useful (though this table does not agree with many on-line resources).
My issue is that there are missing bits and pieces to this e-book compared to the actual printed book. To a home brewer, these are critical issues. My first brew that I used this book on was a Duvel. Compare the Duvel from the hard copy and the soft copy. Important information missing from the soft copy. I brew using all-grain, not extract, and this Duvel leaves out the important section on what base grains to use in place of the less satisfactory (to my tastes) and more expensive (no argument here) DME extracts. The printed version has a nice section following each recipe discussing what all grain brewers should use in terms of base grains.
If this is my first attempt at using the book, and there are issues that make me run down my hard copy again, I fear that there are many more. This book needs to be re-edited and then re-published electronically, at no cost to those of us who bought this book in e-book format.

This introduction by Frith has the advantage of being written by one of the leading scholars in the field of autism. Its strength is that it is highly readable. However, I think that it is slightly lightweight in terms of the issues covered, and in comparison to some of the other "Very Short Introductions" I've read, many of which go into quite a bit of sophisticated detail (the one on Kant, for example!). I wonder how much real insight one is going to get from this book beyond what is available elsewhere (even for free on-line). I suppose part of the problem is that the intended audience is likely a mix of parents/caregivers with autistic children and scholars/students of autism in various fields like psychology. I still think that even the former readership would prefer more detail and scholarship, which Frith could certainly provide.

I also own Frith's edited volume "Autism and Asperger's Syndrome" and while it is old and perhaps slightly out of date (1992) I found it much more engaging and interesting. I would highly recommend that book for people interested in more scholarship on questions related to autism and other ASD.

Full of Very Informative and Easy to Understand Explanations!

Quite embarrassingly, I didn't know so much about autism itself before I dealt with this tremendous guide. Although it doesn't have so many pages, I found it very informative and useful. Especially, I'm intrigued by Dr. Frith's explanations on the follows:
1. What neurotypical means
2. Weak central coherence
I wasn't quite sure what the prefix, neuro- means though neurotypical (NT) is one of the key words on autism/Asperger's. Sure thing, I couldn't find the word even in my dictionary. I mean, I could manage to guess it might mean the opposite to people with developmental impairments. However, I didn't quite catch why. I felt like I could clear up my haze when I found out Dr. Frith says neuro- definitely means the brain. "I guessed right! Neurotypical shows the brain works normally or typically." - That's what I exactly thought!

I realized central coherence is crucial for neurodevelopment. People with strong central coherence can see the whole point, while those with weak one tend to dwell on parts. So I suppose some autistic people have such weak central coherence that they tend to be perfectionists, which makes life more stressful. Positively, they seem to know the details pretty well. In my case, I was incredibly good at kanji (Chinese characters) in my childhood. But the trouble was that I was horrible at comprehending the whole sentence. And I suspected that slowed communication skills. The thing is people with weak central coherence find it so hard to catch the whole content they often tend to miss what matters most.

Overall, this autism guide is suitable if you would like to know the difference between NT's and people with autism/Asperger's with regard to neurodevelopmental psychology.

Fine introduction with two minor faults

On the positive side, here are some gems in a nutshell. I especially like the five different "big ideas" about the underlying problems, and the mismatch of top-down and bottom-up processes as a possible link between these ideas.

On the negative side, I have two remarks:
First, the described Sally-Anne-test on the "theory of mind" might reveal delayed development in young children but has no similarity to the problems older children and adults are facing. The reader might get the wrong impression that autistic people are unable to apply simple logic to situations involving other people. The real problems are at least partly based on the fact that autistic people maintain a one-layer-communication toward obvious goals (as receiver *and* as sender) while NTs communicate also via sound of voice, facial expressions and so on, sometimes toward hidden goals. Thus in communications between autistics and NTs, *both* sides have a theory-of-mind problem: Since even autistics cannot avoid to produce sounds and facial expressions but do not attach meaning to them, the NT is often unable to mask these layers, even when being ask to give attention just to the words, and jumps to wrong conclusions about the state of mind of the autistic person.

Secondly, at the end of the section titled "Asperger syndrome" (pp. 37, 38), the author, after mentioning highly intelligent "Aspies" who are glad not to be NTs, labels the extreme point of view that autism is *generally* not a deficit but a different make-up as "perverse". Well, this is literally true but, the author being an NT, one could look for her hidden goal. Why does she mention an extreme, obviously untenable position in a *very short* introduction? My impression is that she lacks a certain empathy for the "glad aspies". There *are* some reasons why Asperger syndrome should not / could not generally be labelled as a deficit:
1. The sentence "There is a deficit which in rare cases causes an improvement." is paradoxical.
2. It seems to be quite human to respond to the label "disabled" with the announcement of belonging to a different culture; see for example the community of deaf students in Washington, D.C.
3. The highly functioning aspies might fear that somewhen in the future the NT society might find a way to diagnose and to "cure" all autistic children regardless of their specifics.
Here I miss the element of optimistic acceptance which is a key feature of Tony Attwoods book "The complete guide to Asperger's syndrome".

But on the whole I recommend this book as a thought provoking introduction.

Good book to have in your firearms library.

Haven't used any of the detail stripping instructions included in this book yet, but the book appears to be adequate. I bought the book to eventually detail strip a Walther PPQ M2 5" I acquired recently, and even though there are some disassembly tips & tricks that I saw demonstrated on line in You Tube videos about Walther PPQ detail stripping that are not really adequately covered in this book, I did check out the Ruger Mark II disassembly instructions that are also included in this book (a firearm that I am quite familiar with disassembling), and I'm pretty sure with the help of this book I can eventually fudge my way through that task.

As President of the Pyrotechnics Guild International and as an avid rocket enthusiast myself, it gives me great pleasure to provide a glowing review of this exemplary text. Superlatives are truly in order. While my personal interests lie more along the lines of pyrotechnic rocketry, this book, focused on amateur rocketry, nevertheless was a pleasure to read.

The book is exhaustive in its scope and well organized. The reader may explore amateur rocket motor construction in as little or as great depth as desired. It is by far the best book on the subject I have read.

Sleeter's book begins with an historical review of the subject and a discussion of the work done both in remoter history and by our more modern predecessors. A political and philosophical discussion of issues related to this hobby in the modern era in the United States is included. This reviewer finds himself in wholehearted concurrence with the author's perspective. A sober and balanced review of both safety and the necessary legal requirements is presented in detail. Safety is foremost in the author's presentation throughout the text, in all aspects of testing, compounding, and firing of motors.

The second chapter discusses the basics of rocket motor tubes and types, their classification, and nozzles. Both core-burners and end-burners are discussed. A thorough discussion of rocket tooling follows in the next chapter. While many enthusiasts will not be machinists, the depth of the discussion extends to tool manufacture and machining in the next two chapters. The book is accompanied by superb illustrations throughout which make the understanding of the technical aspects of machining accessible to all readers.

Chapters Six and Seven provide information on chemicals used and the preparation of these chemicals for use in rocket motor fuel compositions. Sources and types of chemicals are given. The discussion of charcoal types, particle sizes, and uses for rocket motor fuels is as good as any I have read. Tube construction and purchase are each presented in detail in Chapter Eight.

Chapter Nine details the basic fuel compositions and variations on these major themes. Burn rate adjustment, use of binders, mixing and preparation are presented in a logical and coherent fashion, again, well illustrated as may be seen in every section of this excellent book.

Chapter Ten provides, in seventy odd pages or so, the best-illustrated and most lucidly written description of rocket motor assembly and construction available to the hobbyist. All pertinent aspects are reviewed in detail. Nozzle formation, use of tooling, containment devices, spindles, and accessory tools are provided. Problems the novice is likely to experience are addressed, and solutions to these common dilemmas are offered. Two stage motors are reviewed, as is the concept of the "passfire" and other ignition techniques.

Chapters Eleven through Fifteen discuss in superbly illustrated detail the construction, design, and performance characteristics of motors for each of the basic fuel types. The technical detail and engineering perspective in these chapters make this book a superb reference text for those interested in the details of power characteristics and the influence of these factors on flight performance.

Chapter Sixteen provides an historical perspective on the rockets that the author initially made, which used damp fuel and were dried after assembly. Currently, the author uses dry compositions, which are rammed or pressed to form the grain.

In keeping with the encyclopedic range and depth of the information presented, Chapter Seventeen illustrates the preparation of various types of electric igniters for use in rocketry.

As reliable and predictable flight is critically dependent on reproducible motor performance, the author devotes Chapter Eighteen to a detailed discussion of test equipment and data recording. Well-written text and profuse illustrations make this technical material every bit as accessible and useful as the more basic material in earlier chapters.

The final chapter, much to this reviewer's delight, not only discusses the basics of rocket flight and launching, but also, in two short pages, provides the clearest discussion of rocket aerodynamic stability that I am aware of. While I have seen numerous physics oriented discussions of the center of pressure and the center of gravity, this text and the accompanying illustrations provide the most useful presentation of this material for those who seek to make rockets that begin to fly in a stable manner and remain stable throughout their entire flight. Even after ten years of making and flying rockets, this reviewer gained a better understanding of this simple, yet often all too hard to grasp subject. The transition of these two points as fuel is consumed, a non-wind tunnel approach to easily determining the center of pressure, and a discussion of the ideal spatial relation between the CP and CG were the final treat at the end of this consummately well-written text.

In summary, whether your interest in the subject of amateur rocketry is superficial or detailed, historical or practical, whether you wish to engage in this hobby or merely to gain an understanding of it, whether you are an expert machinist and engineer or a person who is all thumbs, this book has something of value for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough. This book by David Sleeter is a most welcome addition to the rocketry literature and should be in every pyrotechnist's and rocketeer's library. BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN about Rocket motors!

I have read this book, and the reread it, it is very informative, and educational as well, it tells you the do's and don't of motor building , how to make, and get, and improvise, your own motors. Step by step instructions and I only wish there were more books written about technical "Hobbies" like this one, since most Americans shy away for fear of local state and federal laws, when in fact you can make excellent Model Rocket Motors with sugar and a simple safe easily obtainable nitrate! Not a thing more to make it "blast off"

Even if you don't make the motors,its a FUN read and very educational for the novice chemistry and physic students.

I loved it!

Great introduction to solid propellant motors

"Amateur Rocket Motor Construction" by David Sleeter (Teleflite Corporation) is an extremely-detailed description of the construction of blackpowder-type rocket motors, from C8 (3/4" diameter, 3 1/4" long) to I65 (2" diameter, 14" long).
It's a big book, 500+ pages, beautiful photos, extremely clean and clear drawings (and lots of them). Information on almost every aspect of motor construction including: photos of ingredients (some neat photomicrographs); making tooling without a lathe; machining instructions for those who do have a lathe; where to get and how to extract potassium nitrate; types of paper that can be used for casings and what *not* to use; formulations that use sodium nitrate (sometimes easier to find locally than potassium nitrate); stepwise photos AND drawings of the motor-making procedure. All the tested motors given in the book are coreburners, but detailed information, propellant formula, drawings of tooling, caveats, and detailed construction procedure for endburning motors are provided for the individual who wishes to experiment in that direction.
One comment, not a criticism: For the individual who wishes to make large or numerous BP motors, I would strongly suggest Lloyd Sponenburg's book on milling for the amateur pyrotechician (Skylighter and others vend the book, it's about $20). A "sponenmill", properly constructed and loaded with sufficient milling media, will mill large amounts of propellant at a huge time savings.
"More education is almost always better than less." For the individual who is interested in stretching his/her mind, "Amateur Rocket Motor Construction" is a must-have. (I would *really* like to see one of those H137 motors taking off...)

Delivers What It Advertizes

Excellent, nicely done book which carefully balances the politics, the theory and the practical considerations of making your own rocket motors, from the simple but perishable Sugar based motors to huge high performnce black powder motors. Also includes the ORIGINAL 1983 formulas and methods for those who are currently forking out $135 a shot for THAT collectible volume. I think almost all will agree the revised approach and formulas look more relable and safe. Though they dry faster now, there is some time consuming, but necessary testing employed that assures a consistent product. It CLEARLY shows that the provable safety record in amateur rocket engine assembly AND amateur rocketry at all power levels is far better that has been admitted elesewhere, and the book explains why that is so. This is a safety record not approached by other products like gasoline, lawn mowers, lawn darts & air powered firearms.
For those wondering, the skills and hazards involved are not too different from those encountered by an amateur drag racer in his shop, or an amateur steam engine constructor. Access to a machine shop is helpful, but avoidable. Even if you never plan to actually build a motor, this book is still quite interesting and informative.
