An absolute triumph

In a previous review, of Thor: Godbomb, I questioned whether Esad Ribic's art would fit the comic when Thor returned to Earth. I'm very happy to say that it does. In fact, I think the story collected here is the best thing he's ever done. His depictions of technology, of the small town of Broxton, of Galactus, and some wonderfully creepy trolls, all are excellent. Ive Svorcina's palette is still a little dark, but is wider in range than before. In the last issue collected here, the artist is Agustin Alessio, whose work I have never seen before but certainly hope to again. It's a touch more delicate than Ribic's, but manages to hold the reader's attention in an issue that has virtually no action.
I still think that the Gorr story was not very original, but as with the art, any reservations I had about Jason Aaron's writing have been blown away by this collection. Where to start? Well, Roz Solomon, the newest supporting character, is a triumph of creation. She's about as close to a believable human being as one can get in a milieu filled with airborne spy stations, thunder gods and trolls. She's stubborn, persistent,courageous, intelligent, anxious to prove herself, attracted to Thor but very reluctant to just be 'Thor's girlfriend', and prepared to stand up to him when she thinks he's making a mistake. One feels that if it had been her rather than Jane Foster who was taken to Asgard way back in Thor 136, she'd not only have passed Odin's tests for godhood, she'd have turned around and told the old guy how absurd and unfair the tests were.
What of Thor himself? Well, (and this is not entirely down to Aaron, true) he's finally got a character that goes beyond bland nobility.The period (brief in the Kirby/Lee days) when he was at loggerheads with his father, has been extended and more closely examined, and of course Odin's autocratic paternalism has been exposed. At one point I was a little worried that Thor was going to resemble Conan too much, but that's been avoided.(One can't imagine the Cimmerian staying up all night to read books from a cosmic library, as Thor does here.) The character-driven last part shows a Thor who is not supremely self-confident, who has doubts and regrets, without making him a whiner.
Dario Agger, the villain, has a touch of Lex Luthor about him, but also reminded me of Andrew Scott's Jim Moriarty telling Sherlock: 'I'll burn you. I'll burn the heart out of you.'
I'm still not sure if I want to see King Thor on a regular basis, but the sections with him here are well done and even touching at the conclusion. His granddaughters are terrific, and since they don't seem to be sisters, I guess that means Thor had at least three children.
There are hints here that war is coming to the Nine Realms, and I'm sure that Aaron will use it to further extend and delineate the fantasy world of Asgard, which is something I have always felt should be done. I could go on, but I expect you've got the picture by now. This is a classic in the making, and if I said before that I didn't think Aaron's Thor compared with Lee/Kirby, Simonson, and Straczynski, I take that back. Buy it.

New Haggadah

I ordered this to replace the 25+ copies that were lost when I lost my home to Hurricane Katrina. This was the Haggadah my late husband used to conduct our Seders for our large family and group of friends plus any local university students that had no place to attend a Seder. We used them for over 40 years, I love them and have never found any of the newer editions that were as meaningful..

About the Author
Volker Scheid is a scholar physician who engages with East Asian medicine as a clinician, researcher, and teacher. He is a principal research fellow at the University of Westminster, London (UK), where he directs EASTmedicine (East Asian Sciences & Traditions in Medicine), an innovative trans-disciplinary research center dedicated to the integration of East Asian medicines into contemporary health care. He has published widely in academic and professional journals, including two previous books: Chinese Medicine in Contemporary China: Plurality and Synthesis and Currents of Tradition in Chinese Medicine, 1626-2006. He maintains a private medical practice in London and lectures internationally.

Dan Bensky is a graduate of the Macau Institute of Chinese Medicine (Oriental Medicine Diploma, 1975), University of Michigan (B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature, 1978), Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Doctor of Osteopathy, 1982), University of Washington (M.A. in Classical Chinese, 1996), and Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences (Ph.D. in Discussion of Cold Damage, 2006). He contributed to the translation and editing of Acupuncture: A Comprehensive Text, and to the compilation and translation of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica and Chinese Herbal Medicine: Formulas & Strategies. Dr. Bensky is a founder of the Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine. In 2008, he was awarded a Wang Dingyi Cup International Prize for contributions to Chinese medicine.

Andrew Ellis first studied Chinese medicine with Dr. James Tin Yau So at the New England School of Acupuncture. He left New England in 1983 to study Chinese language in Taiwan and apprenticed with Chinese herbalist Xu Fu-Su there for several years. Later he studied internal medicine and gynecology at the Xiamen Hospital of Chinese medicine. While there, he also specialized in the study of acupuncture with Dr. Shi Neng-Yun and dermatology with Dr. Zhang Guang-Cai. Andy is the founding owner of Spring Wind Herbs in Berkeley, California and has authored, translated, or co-translated several books on Chinese medicine including Grasping the Wind, The Clinical Experience of Dr. Shi Neng-Yun, Notes from South Mountain, and Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine.

Randall Barolet is a graduate of Cornell University (B.S. in Environmental Engineering, 1972), New England School of Acupuncture (Diploma, 1978), Nanjing College of TCM Advanced International Acupuncture Course (Certificate, 1983), California Acupuncture College (Doctor of Oriental Medicine, 1986), and the Professional Course of the National Center for Homeopathy (1989). He apprenticed as a homeopath and dowser (1986-90), studied and worked as a writer at the School of Energy Mastery (1993-94), and professionally trained in vedic astrology with Hart de Fouw (1999-2001). He is currently co-editor of B-Alive International Magazine for the B-Society.org in Copenhagen, and practices and teaches integrative healing arts in the United States and Scandinavia.

A good resource with a poor index

This edition is a great improvement over the last. My main complaint is the terse index which limits its clinical usefulness. It is a good reference for learning or examining the formulas themselves, but less good as an efficient reference tool in the clinic. The formula descriptions refer to symptoms common to diagnoses for which formulas are used, but the index doesn't reference those symptoms. Even responsible practitioners of Chinese herbalism who prescribe according to diagnosis and not primarily to symptoms can find it useful to have an index in a book like this that contains symptomatic and western diagnostic references...after all, the information is in the book, why not be able to find where it is? The Materia Medica by the same publisher does a much better job of indexing this material.

Cheaper at the school bookstore

Most of the time Amazon prices are competitive, but for this book the school bookstore was $30 cheaper. Check elsewhere first before buying. The book itself is fine. It is a course textbook and on the CA state acupuncture board list of required books for the licensing exam. This formulas book is authoritative, well-written and among the best of its kind.

Excellent Digital Edition

One-Punch Man volume was a fantastic read with plenty of comedy and action all throughout. Though Saitama is the One Punch Man getting everything in as little as one punch or even consecutive ones, he still has a great partner by his side Genos who really offers us the traditional nearly perfect hero type character that would be the lead in numerous stories. Though ONE hasnt made him that way and often makes him the one most can relate too, Genos is still fun to have around and great. He is personally my favorite and I am glad he remains a a part of this series. Saitama is a good lead as well and one that gives many memorable panels with his facial expressions when things happen.

Quality wise, though this series is originally posted online in an online magazine in which Murata takes full advantage of throwing in color pages, the Black and White version of the moments are still articitically rendered well. He does good using great use of perspectives, blurring the text at times even to focus on some details in the panels. One must also commend how the SFX arent just on the same plane as the text but move in line with the action too. The redrawers had to have done miracles to get it looking this good even as often times the words would move in line with hose the characters flew, or be at the same angle in line with the angle of whatever action is happening in a panel. It is a small touch but one that added a great additional layer of submersion to the action.

One-Punch Man is off to an amazing start and Viz has done well to do nothing to inhibit the experience that Murata and One has aimed for. Getting it digitally is a great thing and with numerous page spreads it looks quite beautiful on the kindle hd. Its a must buy.

Included bonuses is a bonus chapter of Saitama in his school days age, as well as two bonus illustrations, and one short two or so page snowy hill story with Saitama.

The Most Powerful Superhero

One-Punch Man is a redraw by Yusuke Murata of the Japanese webcomic artist ONE's gag manga of the same name. It follows the journey of reluctant and easy-going Saitama who has trained for over three years to pursue his hobby of being a super hero. His power has grown so immense that he is capable of defeating all villains with just one punch, thus the name of the work. City wide threats to humanity thought to be unstoppable are demolished by Saitama, who goes uncredited for his work.

Though the notion of a hero that defeats everything without any effort sounds rather dull, OPM shines through because of its character development. Saitama's stupidity often lands him in a wide range of scenarios which he otherwise hardly cares to be in. Along the way he picks up a disciple, the cyborg Genos, who is amazed by his power and wants to study under him, though Saitama hardly cares about his existence. He also unknowingly picks up a rival by the redundant name of 'Speed-of-Sound-Sonic', who Saitama defeats every time without even knowing he's fighting. As the series progresses and it adds in more and more characters via the Hero Association, you see that even minor side characters get fleshed out such as the lovable License-less (Mumen for those who understand the Japanese pun) Rider or King, the strongest man in the world (or so everyone thinks). It is through these side characters that we see the real character development at work.

OPM currently has an anime series going on which reflects the quality of the redraw. Murata puts pain-stakingly long hours into making the incredibly simple webcomic into a work of beauty. Every panel is clearly defined and you can tell the effort went into it.

I rate the work 5/5, but the English translated and published volumes of OPM deserve only a 4, mainly because of translation liberties and the process of cutting out page after page of Murata's work to condense it into one volume. I recommend you read the webcomic first (the art style is charming if lacking in skill, plus it is much further along in the story than Murata) as well as finding the original publications translated by fans. Do support this work by buying the volumes, but understand that it is missing a lot of substance.

Fresh take on heroes, very funny but not satire

Saitama, One-Punch Man, has somehow trained to such a peak of strength, skill and reflexes he can defeat any adversary, human or monster, with one lethal punch. (As an unwelcome side effect, he's gone prematurely bald.) But this ability is unfortunate for him; he became a hero for fun and thrills, and there's no thrill of battle in a one-punch fight. His many quick victories have left him detached and dulled. His real struggles, triumphs and defeats are in the mundane realm. What can make One-Punch Man collapse, crying out in anguish? It's garbage-pickup day and he forgot to put the trash out.

One-Punch Man lives frugally in a near-deserted section of the city; he shops at the supermarket on bargain day, and takes out marauding monsters. After one such encounter he acquires a disciple he doesn't really want, Genos, a "lone cyborg fighting for justice".

The art is outstanding, with enough realism and detail to give the story grounding, enough vigorous action to give it momentum, and ingeniously invented monsters and baddies (which is a labor of love, since none of them lasts long against One-Punch). There are a fair number of full-page and double-page spreads, which makes the book a somewhat quick read, but each one feels right in the context. At times Saitama is drawn fairly realistically, at other times he's rendered as a very simple line drawing, which threw me off a bit at first until I realized that's a visual interpretation of his personality; he's really a very simple, uncomplicated guy, with a low tolerance for complexity and verbosity ("Cut the crap! Just give me the 20-word version!"). The sound effects are in English, and perfectly blended with the art.

A fun book, and it gets even better as the series develops. Five stars doesn't seem like enough.
