Great introduction - want more!

This book is unquestionably a fine collection of the author's work, which is beautiful, and a fantastic book for giving you a start on the process of inlay. Robinson's writing is excellent, as clear as you could get. And his sequence of coverage makes a lot of sense, too. This is a very good introduction to the possibilities and the process of inlay and if that's what you are looking for then it is worth buying.
But I gave it 4 stars because the book focuses only on his own work and because the promise of "design and technique" is not fully actualized. It's just that one would appreciate somewhat more depth of coverage, adding information on "pitfalls" in addition to "process", as well as a more comprehensive look at other people's possibilities in design. And, I would have really loved to have had some very close up photographs of inlay details, and even photographs of "bad" work and mistakes for reference. In that case, this would be a classic on the topic. It's probably more work than his intention of writing this book, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new edition if that were the case, and as a fellow artisan I would truly appreciate it. How about it, Robinson?

A Master Craftsman

I should start out this review by confessing that I'm biased. I own a custom guitar on which Larry Robertson did the inlay work. Since I'm one of those people who gets very involved in the design of anything that interests me, Larry and I had quite a few talks about what I wanted and how things would be done. This was an educational experience that was worth the price of entry itself, and the result never fails to amaze me.
What convinced me to approach Robinson about the work was the content of this small, but impressive volume. It is one thing to know that a craftsman is a master by reputation, and another to see the evidence in print before you. In my opinion Larry is the U.S.'s premier master of inlay, only surpassed on this continent by Grit Laskin, a Canadian Luthier who does it all, and very well.
The technical portion of this book is excellent. Robinson's written style is so straightforward that my first reaction was that he was leaving something out. But he really doesn't. Between the text and the illustrations, there is enough information and inspiration to last through more than a rack full of guitars. Whether you are a luthier trying to make something special, or a connoisseur of the guitar and its relatives, this book belongs on your shelfs.

Great for beginners

I'm beginning to build guitars and wanted to do inlay work which was a little more intricate than simple pearl dots. The writer explains the process completely. The book also has many photos showing incredible inlay art which serves as inspiration for detailed guitar fingerboard art as well as inspiration for inlay art not associated with instuments. I've never even wanted to build a jewelry box with inlay and marquetry. Now I'm inpired to do just that. Good book.

He changed my life

I first read "Confessions" in 1967 when I was a law student who had figured out he didn't want to be a lawyer. After reading it, I decided that I belonged on Madison Avenue... and that I HAD to work at Ogilvy & Mather. I somehow talked my way into a job there... as a mailboy... and by the time I left a decade and a half later, I was one of the agency's top creative people. I recently retired... after a 38-year career in advertising at five different agencies. "Confessions" remains the best guide ever about how to run an agency, and how to hire one. And David Ogilvy was, without a doubt, the best boss I ever had.

I Confess "David Ogilvy" He's The Man!!

While in Uptown on the Northside of Chicago I found this amazing book at a used book store. What David shares with his listening audience is very inspirational. Besides giving you an amazing foundation David teaches you the following:

How to manage an advertising agency (admire people who work hard)
How to get clients
How to keep clients
How to be a good client
How to Build great campaigns
How to write potent copy
How to illustrate advertisements and posters
How to make good television commercials
How to make good campaigns for food products, Tourist destinations and proprietary medicines
How to rise to the top of the tree--advise to the young

Well these are only a few of the very powerful items that David Ogilvy shares. If you would like to know more just remember you will when you buy this book. It's just a wonderful resource that's well put together. When you read it you will agree. This book needs one more very important person....YOU.

A Classic from One of the Masters

While not as detailed or colorfully illustrated as his later work "Ogilvy on Advertsing," this is still a classic fillld with great information. The book is clearly a precursor to "Ogilvy on Advertising," as many of the same elements can be found in it.
Ogilvy has a wonderfully casual, yet occassionally pompous, style to his writing, but he clearly knows and understands advertising. He manages that rare combination of managing to teach while entertaining. Sometimes his ego and pride come across too strongly, but given the man's accomplishments, I'll cut him slack. And you may wonder why he starts off discussing his days as a chef in Paris, but he does a great job of analogizing that experience to his experiences with running an ad agency.
Highly recommended for anyone involved in advertising, particularly copywriters. Ogilvy was a copywriter and he clearly has a special admiration for those who write copy for a living. He also has great advice to share for anyone in advertising.

Batman v Superman: Tech Manual

The Batman v Superman Tech Manual will appeal to those specifically interested in the intricate details of the designs in the film and how the technology works. In reading through the book, it's apparent that everything was designed not only to look good but to be functional as well. The designs were clearly well thought out. Imagery includes concept art, early sketches, blueprints, and models.

There's more Batman-related content here than anything else, given that he his a human and must rely on technology more so than the other characters in the film. About 80 percent of the book is dedicated to the caped crusader. If you think of Burton's Batman as the height of stylized design and Nolan's Dark Knight as the height of functional design; then Snyder's Batman in "Dawn of Justice" finds a happy medium between style and functionality.

Tech featured in the book:
- The Batsuit: body armor, utility belt, and of course the cape and cowl
- The Mechanical Suit, which was inspired by Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.
- Batman's Armory - he has a variety of weapons, including grenades, sticky bombs, and grappling guns.
- The book covers both of Batman's vehicles extensively. The Batmobile, which blends functionality and elegance better than any of the previous designs. And the Batwing, a vertical take off vehicle that is designed to look like a cross between a bat and an airplane.
- Wayne Manor and the Batcave
- Superman's Suit - the costume is based on the Man of Steel costume, but underwent slight improvements for this new film.

I loved the book

I loved the book. It's a great product, not really a fan of the movie as a whole but i do like zach snyders take on the Batman. The Batmans tech area was where i sort of had a problem. Some of the technology used in the movie doesnt go into full detail. Like the Batwing, they talk about how they made it for cinematic purposes like " Oh we did this because it looked cool". That's basically what they were talking about. They don't go into detail about it like would've liked them to do. Or admit the batcomputer and what technology they used as if batman were using the tech in real life they just say things like, " i wanted it to look modern". They dont show what buttons do or what kind of monitors he used and how its technologically better than most regular computers. They do however go into full detail about the batmobile and most of the batcave which i was extremely satisfied about. Basically if you're into batman like me and want the full detail of every little gadget and vehicle, you're going to be disappointed. But if you're buying it for the movie then go for it.

Even if you didn't enjoy the movie, it's hard not enjoy the costumes, props, and set design. The level of detail that is in this movie is unbelievable. So many things are thought out that most of the audience will never notice, but for fans like me you love that attention to detail.

Read this book: there's a reason that gasoline is 2.93/gallon in highly regulated San Diego, California for premium (91 octane) cheapest I could find here; no less (veteran's day 2016); you will know why America massively decided to change from the policies of the last 8 years.
More jobs, reduced national debt, more oil and natural gas than Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, China and OPEC, combined is the claim. That is with existing technologies.

A Must Read for our Political Leaders

This book should be mandatory reading for every member of Congress. Most people don't know but from 2008 to 2013 America became the #1 country with the most energy deposits (thanks to the discovery of shale extraction). The book rightly asserts that we could accomplish the following things with the new amount of oil and natural gas that is right under our feet:

1) make it harder for terrorist groups to make money on oil
2) lift up a billion people worldwide out of poverty - this year by providing cheap sustainable energy (coal, natural gas, electricity)
3) create over 5 million new jobs in the U.S.
4) pay of our 18 trillion dollar debt
5) have zero effect on climate change/global warming

People need to read this book to get a clear understanding what fossil fuels really are and why "renewables" aren't a good source of energy right now. Great book, easy to follow, important to know. I would ask any of my friends who are worried about climate change to try living with only renewable energy for one week. Go ahead, try it. Then you will understand that we are truly fortunate to have what we have under our feet.
