To her usual successful mix of romance, humor, and spicy sex talk (think Wife of Bath with a pinch of dominatrix), the author of the Legacy trilogy (The Valentine Legacy, 1995, etc.) adds a rather substantial leavening of Disney-esque animal characters to a story set in 1277 England. They include Gilbert the castle goat, who gives milk and eats gauntlets; Edgar the Wolfhound (to whom Severin of Langthorne ties Hastings, his young wife, when he wants to humiliate her); Alfred, the huge housecat and familiar of Hastings's teacher, a recluse called the ``Healer'' who hates all men until she's smitten with Severin's man Gwent (``that lack-witted oxhead''); and Trist, the cute marten who cuddles beneath Severin's tunic. Besides comic relief, Trist's loving presence signifies to Hastings that the fierce-looking stranger to whom she's been betrothed isn't the scary warrior she first imagines. Severin has just returned from the Crusades to find his brother dead, his mother mad, and his estate penniless. With the blessing of King Edward, he has come to Oxborough Castle in East Anglia to wed Hastings, an heiress. He wants a sweet submissive wife who will give him an heir and leave him alone. Instead, he finds a strong-willed young woman well versed in self-preservation and herbal healing. (Borla root in ale makes a ``manhood'' flaccid; mugwort and primrose heal a swollen nose.) Great Medival Read!!

Perhaps those that criticize this book do so not understanding the difference between the sexes during the medieval period and later regency times. I am not as fond of earlier period books but Rosehaven is to me an exception. I loved Severin and Hastings and found their romance very intriging and interesting - certainly not in any ways boring. For a couple that was thrown together in an arranged marriage - they both certainly came together in the end in such a loving and compelling manner - for that period of time it was a true love story. Catherine Coulter is one of the few authors that seems to have great loves stories both in modern times and in the past. She wins again for me with Rosehaven!!

Wow, it really was that bad

I saw all the horrible reviews and thought to myself "it can't really be that bad." But it was. This book is in no way, shape, or form a romance and I can not believe a self respecting woman (who based on some of her other work, is a very talented writer) actually wrote this. I can not write a review of this with out mentioning the rape, no not coercion, actual forcible rape, and the so called hero was never repentant about it, in fact he seemed to be quite proud. If that wasn't bad enough the "hero" continuously degraded and humiliated the "heroine." I understand it's a historical and at the time it is set, it was seen as perfectly OK for a man to treat his wife this way, but this is fiction. The author didn't have to make it this way. Not all romances have to light and frothy, there can and should be conflict, but this was ridiculous. This book is a feminist's nightmare. After the heroine is abused physically and emotionally by her husband, she finally gets a backbone and decides to leave, but every other female character in the book get together to convince her that not only is all of this her fault, but also that she should correct it by initiating sex with this man. Reading this book was like watching a train wreck, you know its bad and you really don't want to see it, but you have to keep looking anyway. I made it to the end of this book because I kept hoping that somehow these characters would do something to truly redeem themselves (although some things are unforgivable). Instead all we got was a fake HEA, there was no change of heart, no understanding of things done wrong, no admittance of guilt or remorse, just a near death experience and an abrupt I Love You from both parties. I have never in my life seen a character less deserving of a happy ending that Severin. Unless you want to be upset and disappointed I would not recommend reading this book, at all, ever, because yes it really is THAT bad.

Disturbing

What worries me with books like this one, is what impact they have on young women reading them and is given the impression that this is love.
Severin is a clear cut psychopath. When he rapes Hasting, he tell her she forced him to do it and he finds him self considerate that he use some cream so he don't rip her totally open. Note, nothing is ever his fault, no matter how bad he treats her, the clear mark of a psychopath.
Regarding Hasting, well is that really love or Stockholm syndrome? Her ladies is naturally a product of their time and enablers for Severins abuse. Only one with lick of sense is the Healer. And the most charming creatures are Trist the marten and Severins mother.
The two second in command Gwent and , also seem to have way more sense and respect for women then their commanders Severin and Sir Richard. No idea why Gwent is described as lack witted. He seems to have a EQ mile above his master.
Some of the rewires criticize Hastings attempt to harm her husband and her rebellion against him. Personally I wished she bashed his brain in with a mace every second page.

About the Author

Robert Byron was born in England in 1905 into a family distantly related to Lord Byron. He attended Eton and Merton College, Oxford, and wrote several travel books before his untimely death in 1941, while serving as a correspondent for a London newspaper during World War II.

A classic of travel writing

Please look past the one-star review of the previous reviewer...check out other editions of the book and you'll get a truer picture. Byron was notoriously opinionated but that is what makes the book. If you have delicate sensibilities, you may want to skip this. Byron wasn't comprehensive so you are reading literature here, not a complete guidebook. His strengths were a love of architecture and hatred of hypocrisy.

This edition has the added bonus of a Preface by Rory Stewart, recent author of THE PLACES IN BETWEEN and THE PRINCE OF THE MARSHES, about Afghanistan and Iraq respectively.

My only quibble with this edition is with the photographs. They are printed on the same paper stock as the text. The publisher can do better than this with a classic.

Persia and Afghanistan When the Going Was Good

In the crepuscular post-September 11 world I find myself in, I thought I would go and read some of the classics of travel in the Middle East back when the going was good. Byron's OXIANA looked promising, so I curled up with it for a few enchanting days.
Byron was no lover of pre-packaged tourist sights. He begins by slurring Venice, where he begins his journey. Later, he slams the Taj Mahal and the Alhambra as examples of what he did NOT want to see in the Middle East. At first, I was not sure where the book was going: Byron comes across at first as one of those hypereducated upper class twits who pop in and out of Evelyn Waugh's novels. Fortunately, it turns out to be just one of the author's favorite personas he assumes from time to time.
Over half a century ago, he saw clearly what would happen to Palestine when the British pulled out, namely, that the Jews and Arabs would be at each other's throats. As he reaches Iran we finally begin to see what Byron is really after: He travels from one old mosque or ruin to another. Although none of places he describes in such loving detail are known to me, it was easy to see that here was a man who wanted to be one of the first to see some marvel of architecture and capture it in photographs and in prose before the forces of time would destroy it utterly.
In the process of going from place to place, he describes the Europeans and locals he meets with humor and shrewdness. The Middle East was not the easiest place to travel in the 1930s, and Byron ran into some almost insurmountable obstacles which he typically surmounts. One such is his arrival in Aghanistan's high country too late in the season. He backtracks to Persia and waits six months until he could return in the spring.
I highly recommend ROAD TO OXIANA to all who wish the world was safe and innocent enough for us to pursue our own Oxianas, wherever they may be.

Byron's Less-Travelled Road

I first read Byron's best travel book in 1982 whilst in the midst of an epic year long trip myself. I now have about 4 copies of the book and an original signed copy with Byron's pictures in it(which are equally brilliant as his prose).His book kindled in me a desire to see all that he had seen and to further explore Islamic architecture and archaeology. After numerous forays into the Near East and a Masters in Near Eastern and Middle Eastern cultures--I am still searching. One can't really appreciate Byron's description of the Sheikh Lutfallah Mosque in Isfahan unless you actually have been there--standing under the immense dome in subdued yellow light. I had that priviledge last year and Byron's description does justice to the magnificent structure. Byron's eye for detail is unmatched in most other travel books and his humour is endless. I had the luck to find "Four Loyalties" by his travelling companion--Christopher Sykes in a book sale in Dubai, UAE. Sykes paints a wonderful portrait of Byron. It's a pity that Byron died so young as I think he is one of the better travel writers--definitely my favourite. Unfortunately, as Bruce Chatwin pointed out in one introduction to "The Road to Oxiana" that you won't be able to drink green tea and eat mulberries under the shade of a plane tree in Istalif, Afghanistan. Those halcyon days that Byron and Sykes experienced and later by Levi and Chatwin are the stuff of legends. "The Road to Oxiana" is a good starting point. Go there now. Good reading.

Bioinformatics as a discipline arose out of the need to introduce order into the massive data sets produced by the new technologies of molecular biology: large-scale DNA sequencing, measurements of RNA concentrations in multiple gene expression arrays, and new profiling techniques in proteomics. As such, bioinformatics integrates a number of traditional quantitative sciences such as mathematics, statistics, computer science and cybernetics with biological sciences such as genetics, genomics, proteomics and molecular evolution.

In this comprehensive textbook, Polanski and Kimmel present mathematical models in bioinformatics and they describe the biological problems that inspire the computer science tools used to handle the enormous data sets involved. The first part of the book covers the mathematical and computational methods, while the practical applications are presented in the second part. The mathematical presentation is descriptive and avoids unnecessary formalism, and yet remains clear and precise. Emphasis is laid on motivation through biological problems and cross applications. Each of the four chapters in the first part is accompanied by exercises and problems to support an understanding of the techniques presented. Each of the six chapters of the second part is devoted to some specific application domain: sequence alignment, molecular phylogenetics and coalescence theory, genomics, proteomics, RNA, and DNA microarrays. Each chapter concludes with a problems and projects section, to deepen the reader's understanding and to allow for the design of derived methods. Many of the projects involve publicly available software and/or Web-based bioinformatics depositories. Finally, the book closes with a thorough bibliography, reaching from classic research results to very recent findings, providing many pointers for future research.Overall, this volume is ideally suited for a senior undergraduate or graduate course on bioinformatics, with a strong focus on its mathematical and computer science background.

About the Author

Andrzej Polanski is Professor at the Silesian University of Technology. Prior to this, he worked as a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas, Human Genetics Center, Houston USA (1996-1997) ans as a Visiting Professor at Rice University, Houston USA (2001-2003). His research interests are in bioinformatics, biomedical modeling and control, modern control and optimization theory.

Marek Kimmel, Ph.D., is a Professor of Statistics at Rice University in Houston, TX, Professor in Department of Automatic Control, Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Poland, Professor of Biostatistics and Applied Mathematics (adj.) at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and a Professor of Biometry (adj.) at the School of Public Health of the University of Texas in Houston. He is heading the Rice Bioinformatics Group as well as the doctoral program in Statistical Genetics and Bioinformatics. Dr. Kimmel is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. His principal interests are stochastic modeling of human disease (in particular lung cancer progression and screening), statistical and population genetics, biostatistics and bioinformatics.

I hate this one but it's personal opinion

I think it depends on where you are in the bioinformatics field. For me, I need something really practical of what need to be done and not to much of math and matrices and everything else. I figure it would not work for most of us who are not that good with math and computers.

AMAZING and POWERFUL

AMAZING and POWERFUL information. I have been doing healing work with Carol and as a result I am system free of Ulcerative Colitis and Grief.
Now there is finally tools to invest in myself to continue the healing and a deeper understanding of the Life Weaving healing. I also have experienced just by connecting with reading the books and charts the healing is integrating deeper as a result of the energy of the channeled information. The words have a healing vibrations of their own. I have now started using the tools to help my loved ones as well.

Feather, whose latest series were the V series (Vanity, Vice, Violet, etc.) and the Charm Bracelet trilogy (The Emerald Swan, The Silver Rose, etc.), sets her new Brides trilogy during the English Civil War. Each installment will focus on one of three young women joined by friendship and fate. Portia Worth's uncle, Cato Granville, is a Roundhead and mortal enemy of Rufus Decatur, a nobleman who has sworn fealty to King Charles in hopes of winning back his family's property and honor. Rufus's men mistakenly kidnap Portia, but when no money is forthcoming, the two outsiders?an unwanted hostage and a dispossessed noble?find a common bond. It's a fine romantic convention though rather marred by Portia's unduly prickly and bellicose nature. The author does a good job of capturing the period?the class differences; life in a military encampment and during a siege; and the fickle loyalties of the day. But Feather can also stumble into breathless melodrama in dialogue and description: "He'd nurtured his anger with a fierce flame, but now as he tried with his own breath to return the living warmth to her face, to her eyes, that anger was as if it had never been."

I fell in love with these characters

This is your standard historical romance book, but I really felt a connection to the characters in this one. Even when the three girls meet at the beginning, I attached to each of them in their own special way. Portia is a very loving, intelligent and strong woman who fights for what she believes in. I found myself really liking this woman and cheering her on. I also really wanted her and Rufus to get together...I laughed and cried right along with the ups and downs of their relationship. The pinnacle scene in this book where they finally get together can put me in tears every time I read it. If you read these books for the historical/battle scenes, you may be a bit disappointed. The battle scenes are somewhat realistic, but are pretty glossed over in that everyone makes up and becomes friends in the end after years of hatred. That was a bit amusing, but is really a small part of the overall story. I also purchased the other two books in the series and look forward to reading them.

First of an English Civil War series - good one-time read

At the beginning of this book we meet the three young girls who are the heroines of this series: Portia, Phoebe and Olivia. This introductory scene appears in all three books, just in case anyone's missed it.
Portia is the bastard daughter of the Marquis of Granville's bastard brother. When her father dies, Granville offers her a home within his household, but he isn't that interested in her, and his wife, Diana, makes it clear that she is to be an extra servant, helping take care of the infant children. Olivia, Granville's daughter from an earlier marriage, befriends Portia, however.
An old enemy of the Granville household, Rufus Decatur, former Earl of Rothbury, has sworn revenge on the family of the man who was responsible for his father's death and disgrace. Olivia is to be kidnapped and used as a bargaining tool. However, a mistake is made and Portia is kidnapped instead. Rufus isn't sure what to do with her, so he keeps her prisoner.
However, Portia then decides that she wants to train and to join his militia as a soldier - even though she knows that Rufus intends to attack her uncle's household! That part was difficult to swallow; war is a serious business, and even if Portia isn't particularly loyal to either King or Parliament, the thought of striking against her uncle's home, and especially her cousin, should surely not have come so easily to her.
Like another reviewer, I wasn't convinced by the 'falling in love' part of the book, and the resolution in particular was unconvincing.
Finally, Rufus at one point used the term 'bourgeoisie'. Isn't early seventeenth-century England a little early for that term to be in common currency, since it's normally associated with the French revolution?

I'm hooked!

This book is a great read, with well-developed and lovable characters and a pretty good plot. I love the heroine's spunk, independence, and determination, and I will most definitely buy the next two books of the trilogy when they come out. I also like the settings--a drafty castle, a frozen moat, a freezing countryside, a secluded criminal camp, a cozy cottage. I also liked that the heroine is not absolutely perfect in looks; she is realistic, like the rest of us, and her beauty comes from her heart and personality. The sexual tension is believable every step of the way, and the plot never slows down. My favorite scene is the practical jokes that Portia and Olivia play at one point.
