The Band Still Plays

In Randy Shilts's 'And The Band Played On', the author successfully documents a moment in time that represents a major shift in the world. The AIDS epidemic has killed millions, but the fight against death mobilized the gay voice and can be seen as having led to the modern political rights we now have because it forced us out of the shadows and into living rooms.

Drawing upon a wealth of sources Shilts' social history of the AIDS epidemic is a moving piece that uses oral history to illuminate a world not ready for the AIDS epidemic. Whether this was because of homophobia or prudishness or other social forces is unclear and up to the reader to decide. But it was not until the death of the manly and supposedly straight Rock Hudson that there was a a true paradigm shift in treatment of the AIDS epidemic. Until then responses to the epidemic were woeful.

Beginning in the late 1970s in Africa and continuing to the late 1980s in the US, this particular history needs to be known. The cast of characters is large. And the death tool is almost as large. This is what makes this tragic history especially poignant and remarkable. As a gay man, I am always aware of AIDS and precautions against it. But this story starts in a period before AIDS was known. In this idyllic post-Stonewall period, sex was freedom for many. Having been born in 1980, I avoided the worst of the plague, but having recently seen The Normal Heart on HBO, I wanted to learn more. And this book succeeds in educating a reader about what can happen when ignorance and politics trump science.

Now that we are entering the Truvada period, I think it especially important to understand what can happen again. Will it? Who knows but antibiotic resistant gonorrhea is out there. Who knows what other plagues lurk. Waiting.

One of the Best Books I've Read

I have a deep love of sciences and learning how things work. I especially enjoy infectious disease. Now, I was never quite impressed with HIV and never really wanted to learn about it. However, after a college class took us on a tour of the CDC and they talked about HIV in depth I became more interested.
Flash forward a few years to now. I was home and wanted to watch TV, as I looked through the free streaming movies feature of Amazon Prime (which is awesome and totally worth it) and I came across a movie called "And the Band Played On." I vaguely remember discussing my love of epidemiology and someone had recommend I watch this movie. I guess I never looked it up then and it vaguely sounded familiar, sure enough it was THAT movie. So I began the movie and you could tell it was filmed in the 90s, which didn't make me think I would really love it. However, from the first scene I was hooked! I only watched the movie, completely paying attention. I rarely watch TV or movies and pay 100% attention, just kind of have it in the background and be doing other things around the house or making things. This movie was SO good that I was almost late for an appointment because I completely lost track of time.
After, I saw that movie I was completely enthralled with learning more about HIV and how we discovered it. I came and got this book and it has yet to disappoint. It is a thick book with small print, but the writing style is easy to read and interesting; unlike some books that bore you to death for the whole 500 pages.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the medical field, science field, or just likes this kind of stuff. It is great.

A 'Hear the Bullet Fly Past Your Ear' Sense of Immediacy

This is nothing less than a compulsively readable tour-de-force in modern medical journalism. It's the history of a disease, a people, and an era all in one.

I always knew I'd read this book eventually, but as with any long non-fiction tome there comes a risk that at some point your attention span might have to bow out. Not here: this book holds your interest on nearly every page (I skipped one or two of the more dense courtroom testimony pages, but often later went back to read them anyway). Randy Shilts does not ask for your time lightly - every chapter here is earned.

It seems almost an omniscient narrative voice in involved, and with over 900 interviews and his own previous years of investigative work on AIDS, there's a reason for that.

Before reading, I had foolishly assumed the word politics had been added to the title to sex it up a bit. Nope. The story of the various responses people, communities, and entire governments had to AIDS was all about politics. So often reading this book did I get the impression you could actually hear the bullet whiz past your ear. If you were born around or before 1980 in a first world country and ever had a blood transplant, this could have been your story too. While Mr. Shilts avoids sensationalism, the story is sensational enough in its barest facts for that point to be clear.

I immediately looked up the author to learn more about what he had written only to discover he too died from AIDS in the 1990's. His book, already a tribute to a lost generation, is now an example of all the substantive contributions those men and women could've made if politics could have been shoved aside sooner.

This book is a rare thing: it is both a great, historic work and a damn good read. Would that Randy Shilts had lived long enough to give us many more of its calibre.

Dr. Cooper is a True Spunky Eldster!

Kenneth Cooper, MD, was the inventor of aerobics exercise,
which he initially developed to keep astronauts physically fit
while in space. At age 67 he wrote a provocative book titled
Regaining the Power of Youth at Any Age. Cooper challenges the
notion that "true happiness is possible only if we can maintain
some illusion of agelessness." Cooper writes to people
between the ages of 31 and 75 with his "easy-to-use manual for
recapturing their lost or declining youthful vigor," advocating
a combination of impact exercise, aerobics, and stretching. His
exercise program is specially designed to counteract the effects
of aging--particularly to prevent loss of bone and muscle mass,
and maintain cardiovascular power. "Building bone mass is
an essential part of maintaining the vigor of youth," he writes.
"Lean body mass provides us with the power and strength we
need to continue to move, lift, and maneuver in our older years
as effectively as we did when we were in our teens or twenties."

Cooper clearly practices what he preaches. In Regaining
the Power of Youth, he skillfully combines personal experience,
research knowledge, and wit. While writing his book, he suffered
a mountain bike riding accident and smashed head first into
a rock. He consequently "became even more a believer in
protective helmets than in the past." This incident validates the
claims of his exercise and fitness program: although he was in his
late sixties, he didn't break any bones and only needed a little
aspirin at night for soreness.

Cooper's exercise strategy promises "boundless energy and
stamina, emotional resilience and optimism, and agile reasoning,
creative thinking, and comprehensive memory." These are
qualities we all need at any age, but when we can reclaim them
in middle age, it effectively demonstrates the power of exercise
as a bona fide agent of rejuvenation.

Dr. Cooper's work was a great influence on my own research. I consider him to be one of my Spunky Eldsters--older individuals who can serve as role models to us baby boomers of how to age successfully. All us boomers need to be reading books like this--and not just read them, but practice what we read about. Get out there and get more exercise, eat healthy, take better care of our bodies. After all, what's the point of living a long life if we are not going to be healthy?

I know this is is an older book so I was very glad that[...] carried the book. The book is a wonderful. It is full of everyday suggestions to help a person stay as physically and mentally strong as possible.

A Good Reference and a Self-Study Guide

As with most of the books from the Schaum's Outline collection, this book comprises the fundamentals so it can be used as a supplement to standard textbooks in class, as a stand-alone study aid, or as a reference for the professional practitioner.

My academic background is in Electronics Engineering, so I really didn't take any courses on finances back in College. When my work forced me to gain knowledge in the area of Financial Math I turned to this book as a self study guide. The text is clear, has a lot of worked problems and examples, and it did its job: Gave me the knowledge I needed.

No wonder that this is actually the Very best-selling book of the whole Schaum's Outline collection.

Excellent Value

The target audience of this book is people who want to know how to estimate annuities, life insuarance premiums etc. If you are sitting the actuarial exam(SOA) 2 this is what you need for the Theory of Interest part. It also covers parts of exam 3. The book is affordable and way better than any other else. The methodology is crystal clear.

About the Author

Professor John Egan, is Head of the Department of Marketing at Regent’s University, London. He is Chair of the Academy of Marketing, the major UK academic marketing organisation, and Chair of the Learning Advisory Group, formally the Senate, of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He is a Chartered Marketer, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Marketors.

Professor Egan has a long publishing career and is the Editor of The Marketing Review and on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Political Marketing and Marketing, Intelligence & Planning. He has authored books on Marketing Communications and Public Relations and his textbook ‘Relationship Marketing’ is now in its fourth edition and has been translated into Russian, Simple Chinese and Mandarin.

He entered academia in 1997 following a career in luxury retailing initially with American Department Stores and later with Mappin & Webb, Crown Silversmiths, and Garrard, Crown Goldsmiths.� Prior to his appointment at Regent’s University Professor Egan was at London South Bank University where, in addition to his academic marketing responsibilities, he was Faculty Director of Marketing and External Communications responsible for all aspects of marketing in the Faculty.

This is a very good introductory book on IA-32 Assembly programming on Linux (well, Ubuntu distro specifically but adaptable to other distros too). Uses NASM and a stack of tools that are likely available for all distros (but again definitely if you have an Ubuntu variant).

If you're really ready to take your time and are shooting for a well-grounded point of departure than this book is for you. If you've already mastered things like IA-32 architecture, number theory, adding in hex, fundamentals of assembly, registers, eflags, etc., than this might move too slow for you. That being said, you may just find some interesting nuggets in this book.

One thing I really liked about this book is he moves at a very realistic gradient for the beginning assembly newbie and also provides a very nice setup for experimentation (that is, he suggests a certain toolset which, once setup, will allow you to step through your program and inspect the registers instruction by instruction). I found this quite helpful in making abstract concepts more concrete and to confirm my understanding. Also, very nice use of diagrams not usually found in a topic as terse as assembly language!

Some have complained on earlier editions that they don't like his writing style and that he takes too long to get you to the meat of assembly. I wasn't too crazy about the Martians FooBitidy whatever analogy that he uses, and he definitely can take a bit long to get to the point from time to time. However, this can come in useful for complicated sections as he really takes his time to lay it all out in such a way to where you'd have to be asleep not to "get it". As a programmer who has learned to do a lot of reading on the side, I don't much care if 100 pages could have been stripped down - I'm more concerned with whether I can actually learn from a book. If you require K&R style writing you my not like this. However, my suggestion - deal with a bit of annoying fluff and you'll be thankful in the end. I just don't see another resource that gets you this kind of grounding IMO.

You definitely should be ready to take your time with this one. For example, he will ask you to put down the book and learn to add up to 0Fh + 0Fx, and expects you to commit this to memory. I made flash cards and put the book down for a few days until I had that down pat (this only happens once in the book though) - so yes, there's some commitment involved on the reader's part. But it won't dump you on the side of the road half way in so you'll be happy you made the effort. Note that he many times will present a code example with a few new concepts and THEN explain those concepts shortly thereafter. He seems to like to show some things in context and this requires some forward references - nothing that leaves you too miffed though.

Overall, wish I had this book earlier in my career! Well down My Duntemann!

Fantastic introduction to assembly language

The author is a very experienced assembly language programmer, and he covers topics in a very organized way so that the reader can fully understand at each step of the way. This is a bit boring for programmers who are familiar with assembly language, even those vastly different from Intel's, but those readers can skip the first three chapters and skim parts of the others.

The author does a fantastic job of focusing on the most important information needed for assembly language programming. He does not present a comprehensive explanation of every instruction, but instead explains each type of instruction and the most used instructions. He covers the use of tools including debuggers and make, and explains how to interface with C programs and how to make Linux kernel calls. After reading each chapter, I was able to use references available on the Internet to find any information that wasn't in the book, such as a comprehensive list of kernel calls and Intel assembly language instructions.

The instructions given in the book for setting up the tools are for Ubuntu, but yum works well on Fedora:
yum install unzip bless nasm make gcc kdbg insight kdesdk kdebase

One problem with the book is that it sticks to 32-bit assembly language and doesn't explain what differs on 64-bit systems. I found that I had to change nasm's output format from elf to elf64 (-f elf64) and use the 64-bit registers (rax, rbx, rbp, etc.) The book describes pushad and popad to push and pop all general purpose registers, but these do not work with the 64-bit registers. Indicating that a memory reference is 64 bits is done with qword. I couldn't output command line arguments as set up by the Linux runtime without copying them into a different buffer.

On 64-bit Linux, the glibc calling conventions are completely different than those described in the book. I was able to figure out how to call printf by writing a C program and disassembling it with objdump, which I found more readable then gcc's assembly listing. The glibc calling convention for 64-bit is that the arguments are passed in registers, with the first argument in rdi, second in rsi, third in rdx, and fourth in rcx; also the rax register must be set to zero for variable-argument functions. The registers rbx, rbp, rsp, r12, r13, 14, and 15 must be saved by the called function.

The fact that I was able to program on a 64-bit system even though the book doesn't cover 64-bit systems is a testament to how well the author covers the basics. Instead of trying to provide every little piece of information an assembly language programmer may need, he provides clear explanations of the basics so that the reader can understand enough to look up any additional information needed. I recommend this book over all others for programmers who want to learn Intel assembly language.

Where the Cool Kids Program

A long time ago, in a basement far far away, I was sitting in front of a long-suffering television set, banging away on a Commodore 64, trying to dive beyond BASIC programming to where the cool kids played, down below the user interface, down in the guts of the machine itself. Stripped of the training wheels, you could write programs on that ancient machine that would fly. The cool kids wrote programs in assembly language. I tried. But I never got there. By the time I hit college, they didn't teach it anymore, and gradually, I moved past it to other programming, and ultimately to more satisfying careers doing other things.

But I never forgot.

Given that background, I didn't have high hopes for Assembly Language Step by Step. I know Jeff. I've read and enjoyed his science fiction, and he's blurbed mine, and to disclaim a moment, I know him well enough that he wouldn't let me pay for my copy of this new, near total rewrite of his classic text on the matter. I knew if anyone could explain assembly to me, it would be him, but I still expected to hit the point where my eyes glazed over and I didn't care anymore.

Instead, by five chapters into the book, I had refreshed my knowledge of binary and hexadecimal math. I'd looked into computer architecture to a depth I never reached before, and begun to understand, really understand the true center of assembly programming, the addressing of memory. And it's not like it was in the days when I tried to learn assembly before. Modern operating systems treat memory differently, and it's this new, more complex memory mapping that I understand now. Even after 30 years in and around the computing industry, this book taught me things I didn't know about what computing is, when all the familiar abstractions are stripped away and the bare code is exposed.

I can't wait to go further.

Thirty years later, that geeky kid in the basement who didn't get it, finally gets it.

If you want to get it, if you want to program where the cool kids program, if you want to understand how that machine on your desk really works, you want, you need, you must have this book. Buy this book. You won't regret it.

Highly recommended.

Splendid Fifth in the Series

I recommend D.S. Butler’s procedural series and the author’s latest work featuring DS Jack Mackinnon and a returning cast in Deadly Ritual. Any of the novels can be enjoyed separately out of order, but you should review the previous books as they are all first rate. If Butler writes it, I'll read it.

The first four novels leaned heavily on Butler’s technical background as a clinical chemist. This newest work is not as science oriented but is still somewhat arcane. It combines an African immigrant spiritual element, ritualized murders and very serious child endangerment challenges.

As usual, Butler does not mess about. The prose is fast-paced and nicely edited . . . nothing much to quibble about in the presentation. I would highly recommend Butler’s series and this volume for fans of UK police procedurals that are looking for entertainment with somewhat less salty language and over-the-top sex and violence. Again, if Butler writes it, I’ll read it. You too are likely to become a fan . . . five stars.

Not Up to Expectations

For some reason, this mystery didn't come alive for me. I have read the other books in the series and appreciated each as a good read, cleverly plotted with interesting main characters. Even the characters that I previously liked - Chloe and Jack particularly - fell flat this time out. There was no tension in solving the mystery which surrounded, perhaps, Voodoo, perhaps some combination of that and another cult. I didn't buy that nor did the justification for the murders seem plausible. The new character, Alfie, who was central to the mystery, wasn't more than a stereotypical preteen. I didn't even cotton onto the fact that he was black (hence the likelihood of Voodoo?) until well into the story. So, while this was a disappointment, I will give the next in the series - if there is one - a try since the major fault was with this particular plot.

The British Queen of police procedurals!

In numerous reviews, I have said that the Brits write the best police procedurals. Tim Ellis and Bill Rogers are in the running for King, but no female I have read edges out Butler. The Brits are so good that there are three or four Americans writing British style police procedurals, the most noted being Preston Child (see Ice Station Wolfenstein). This author name is a combo of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, American coauthors of the famous Pendergast series.

Butler's books are all spot on when it comes to having a plot and characters that are believable and well defined and developed. The killers are brutal and difficult to catch, but catcher they get. This is her fifth book and I recommend you read them all. Enjoy!

This book offered some additional tips like how DHEA works and impacts your body. However, if you have been researching and/or have read several other books on fertility like I have, this book really doesn't offer additional information. I think it's a great book for those who are just starting on their fertility path but for those have done their research already it doesn't offer anything new.

I am 44 years old and have had 2 miscarriages and 4 IVF cycles and no luck ...I found this book while looking at older women by age in regards to childbearing. I read the book and have a lot of hope also given the fact that Darja has had her 2nd child at age 45. I give this book a thumbs up!!

For women who are having trouble getting pregnant, honestly, this book is very informative and detailed on ways to help you help yourself. I used to ask why is it when a woman goes to her doctor, seeking help with her fertility, her chances of getting pregnant are the same as when she's trying on her own. Darja put it best, saying the doctors can only do so much --- they have lives, too. The winner here is you! You have to change your lifestyle habits to better your chances. Definitely a must-have book in my honest opinion.

The wholly modern study of "prehistoric man," which in our time is making such progress, has hitherto almost exclusively been founded upon the study of the ornaments, weapons, and other remains of primitive peoples, which for this purpose have become greatly valued, and are searched for in the bowels of the earth, and drawn forth to light in nearly every part of the globe. But the time will certainly come when any relics of spiritual life brought down to us from, prehistoric mankind, which may still be found in the folklore of the more isolated and primitive nations, will be valued as highly as those material remains. In this respect the Eskimo may be considered among the most interesting, both as having been almost entirely cut off from other nations and very little influenced by foreign intercourse, and also as representing a kind of link between the aboriginals of the New and the Old World.

Some illustrations, designed as well as drawn and engraved on wood by natives of Greenland, are given, the author having supplied the original blocks to be used in this edition for this purpose.
