About the Author
Russell Crandall is a Professor of International Politics and American Foreign Policy at Davidson College. His previous books include The United States and Latin America after the Cold War (Cambridge, 2008); Gunboat Democracy: US Interventions in the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Panama (2006); and Driven by Drugs: US Policy Toward Colombia (2008). Interwoven with his academic career, Crandall has held high-level foreign policy appointments within several sectors of the US government, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon and the National Security Council at the White House.

Ilona Bray is an author and legal editor at Nolo, specializing in real estate, immigration law, and nonprofit fundraising. She is co-author of "Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home" and also edits a number of Nolo's small business books. Bray's working background includes solo practice, nonprofit, and corporate stints, as well as long periods of volunteering, including an internship at Amnesty International's main legal office in London. She received her law degree and a Masters degree in East Asian (Chinese) Studies from the University of Washington.

A fundraising book for the small nonprofit, or one that is not well organized!

This is a great book for the small nonprofit that does not know much about fundraising. If it were for a more established nonprofit, then it would not have referred to major gifts as those starting at $500. I'm used to major gifts starting at $10,000 and going up well into the 6 figures.

This book explains how to do the following:

1. Work with individual donors
2. Plan special events
3. Solicit grants from foundations and corporations
4. Get media coverage (publicity)
5. Use the Internet to help in the fundraising process
6. Create print marketing materials like brochures, newsletters, and annual reports

All the above are important parts of a fundraising plan. One has to set goals, strategize how to attain the goals. Then attract individual donors and develop a rapport with those donors so they give more and more each year. Eventually those donors will become major donors, but that topic is best left for another book.

The book includes a good list of Web sites for prospect research. But the appendix materials didn't seem to be up to par.

All in all, this book provides grassroots strategies for struggling nonprofits. It is no-nonsense and well organized. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the basics about nonprofit fundraising. Topics beyond the scope of this book are planned giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, and endowments. But if you read this book and understand it, then you will be ready to learn about the other topics just mentioned. 5 stars!

Clear and Simple Explanations of What Works

There are a tremendous number of non-profits around. There are also a tremendous number of funding organizations. Your job as the fundraising manager (whatever your exact job title may be) is to put your particular non-profit together with one or more funding organizations to raise the money you need.

There is a basic set of fundraising skills and technologies that you can use to fund nearly any non-profit. Gone are the days (in most places) where you can put together some simply fund raising activity and gain enough money to get you through the year.

Here in one simple book is an excellent summary of all of the most modern techniques. It includes:

Developing a Plan that will include your goal, the assets you have to do fundraising, and a strategy to use these assets in the most profitable manner.

Attracting Individual Supporters, which means making your organization look wupport-worthy, understanding your supporters and attracting new ones.

Your best supporters are those that have given you money before. Here are the techniques to keep them giving.

These techniques and many more are discused here by an expert in the field. It should be required reading for anyone responsible for fund-raising in a worthy organization.

Good Book for Start-Up Non-Profits

I found this book VERY helpful. In fact, I was so fascinated with it, I couldn't put it down. It was like a good novel. I immediately changed some of my thank you letters and re-did my Corporate request for funding letter. I will continue to use it's suggestions. The book is well written and not full of 'filler info', but very solid recommendations that one can put to use right away.

Steven J. Best is an attorney and a founding partner of the Affinity Consulting Group, a well-known and well-respected law office practice management and technology company. With an educational background in law, accounting and economics, Steve consults with law firms throughout the United States on law office software as well as sophisticated practice management and document management issues.

After practicing law for ten years, Steve began his career as a legal technology consultant helping lawyers and their staff understand PCLaw�. Although he’d not used PCLaw in his practice, he immediately recognized PCLaw as an outstanding time billing and accounting software system made for law firms of all disciplines. Because of an undergraduate concentration in accounting, Steve’s understanding of debits and credits, coupled with his experience as an attorney, made PCLaw a natural fit for his consulting practice. Steve is also a certified consultant/trainer, maintaining certifications in many law office software products including time/billing/ accounting, practice management, document management, PDF production, document assembly and paperless office packages. Steve also is a national speaker at many CLE programs throughout the US and Canada. Steve provides guidance and recommendations. It doesn't take the place of working with a PCLaw certified consultant but can work to help you formulate your questions and remind you of what you have learned.

Not only do I highly recommend DARK VENGEANCE but every other novel E.R.Mason has published!!!

I am amazed at E.R. Mason's novels as this is a writer who seems somehow to be able to capture my interest in any story from the very first sentence, it would seem. Dark Vengeance is no exception - and, what is a bit unusual is that when looking back at this novel (which is part of a series based on one person in particular, it might not even seem that the actual story was all that significant. But, while that occurred to me for a moment after finishing reading the novel, upon just a moment of reflection, I both recalled how I had felt that same way for an instant finishing an earlier novel and how I had immediately seen how mistaken that was then, and very definitely was mistake regarding Dark Vengeance because underlying all the stories and descriptions and problems that go on in his stories is always a series of very important personal issues that all of us, no matter what we do in life, have to at some point come to face -
So = I've been totally surprised to find this unheralded author who has the most incredible ability to completely get my interest in his writing from the get-go in novel after novel, but who also has the unique ability to get the reader to think -or at least me - to consider some very important issues for my own life because they get just pushed right into me even if his story seems all adventure and far away.
I 've not only found every single one of his novels that Amazon offers (at any incredibly low price = either for free or $.99), but I started researching to see whether he might have written other novels beyond those that Amazon carries - and indeed, I found that he has - I don't5 know why they aren't available through Amazon -but these others are also generally available for free I recommend one called Aurora and another entitled:The Glass Hummingbird which I am currently reading and not only are the stories again very involving with important issues that are there once one reflects for a moment - but again - and I failed to mention this above -the ideas involved are highly creative and ones that I've never run across from other authors. I not only recommend Dark Vengeance, but every other novel from this completely unheralded but absolutely brilliant author.And why all his novels are available either for free or for $.99 is everyone's fortune - and very surprising.

Darn that Tarn!!

EVA specialist and trouble-magnet Adrian Tarn and his buddy RJ Smith are sent on an easy mission: pick up the newly refurbished/upgraded starship Electra from the high-tech shipyards of Enuro and bring her back to Earth with an assigned skeleton crew. The trip out would be even easier, as passengers of the luxury Enuro starship Star7. What could possibly go wrong?

Hah! With Tarn and RJ both aboard, you gotta KNOW that strange and dangerous events will be taking the ride out into deep space with them.

As usual, Mason weaves an intricate, exciting and realistic high-tech space adventure for the reader to enjoy. I can't say much about those adventures here as the story is unusually vulnerable to spoilers, in several places.

I can say that the notoriously female-commitment-averse Tarn picks up what is, for all practical purposes, a wife during this adventure. Therein lies my only real beef with this book, and the reason I took off a star from an otherwise worthy novel: I found myself actually angry at the very end of the story, as Mason just ever-so-casually has Tarn dispose of what looked like a very promising and warm relationship with this lady, apparently just so the 'hero' could be set free to charge out to the next adventure in the next book. This is the first time in the entire book series that I found Adrian Tarn's persona badly lacking in character - or maybe Mason's is badly lacking, I don't know. Tarn has been well-developed as somebody who CARES about people - enough so that he has risked his life multiple times to save them - so how could he DO that to a lady??! Arrrgh.

On the other hand, the fact that a story was able to raise up such strong emotion in me may be the true indicator of how good a writer E. R. Mason really is. I still recommend it for any reader interested in some very interesting alien cultures, the technical details of future spacecraft, EVA suit practicalities, and general rock-em sock-em action. Buy this book, but of course read the prior series first.

A new space ship and a grand task set by alien friends. Could Tarn ask for anything more? Choosing and gathering the right team, learning and training together on the sims - the personalities emerge and gel together. The beginning is entertaining and grabs your attention before the crew actually sees their space ship and start off on their adventure! If you love space adventure and derring-do (sp?) - you'll really enjoy this book. Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride! :)
SHOCK DIAMONDS is a great book to read next. Just as enjoyable. Mostly the same main characters.

I noticed one or two instances of a letter out-of-place, but since they didn't interrupt the flow of my reading, I didn't feel it fair to drop a star on these great books. The books are affordable right now so I'd jump on the buy button in case the price goes up. Also, while not directed at teenagers, these books are clean enough to gift in that direction, too.

Excellent book on part of the bible that puzzle many

Perhaps no two books of the Bible cause a greater amount of controversy than the book of Genesis, and the book of Revelation. In the book of Genesis, people spend an inordinate amount of time discussing matters relating to how literally one should read the creation stories, and the first three chapters of the book. Regarding the book of Revelation, there are a number of ways of interpreting the text, many of which have to do with a detailed timeline of the end times. People argue about whether they are pre-tribulation, post-tribulation, pre-millenial, amillenial, and they also argue about much more.

Michael Pahl, in his book The Beginning and the End: Rereading Genesis's Stories and Revelations's vision challenges its readers to begin to look at each of these texts through a broader lens. Pahl challenges us to look at what the Bible is saying in Genesis about who we are, who God is, what life and death mean, and what our basic needs are in relationship to God, the world, and one another. In Revelation, we are challenged to understand what the goal and direction of humanity is, and what the God's ends are in relationship to humankind. In pointing to The Beginning and the End, this book encourages believers in Jesus to see their lives and Scripture as one great, powerful, life-giving and life-transforming narrative that is pregnant with meaning from start to finish.

I enjoyed this book very much. It was academic, but it was neither inaccessible or stuffy. Pahl has a grace-filled way of communicating what he wants to say, and this tone guides this book from cover to cover. The introduction makes clear what is going on in the entire book when it says, "If you have ever wondered if there might be more to Genesis than fuel for anti-evolutionism, then this book might be for you. Or if you have ever thought, 'Revelation has to be more than simply a roadmap for the future of the Middle East, then perhaps you will find this book just what you are looking for (p. ix). I had wondered and thought these things often, so this little text was a perfect brief theological journey for me.

The Beginning and the End is a book, with the right group, would be a good six week study. It might also be a good guide for a sermon series for many pastors, such as myself.

A book worth reading

I am not a graduate of Cedarville University but have taught on the beautiful campus as an Adjunct. I originally bought this book as I heard Michael W. Pahl was a professor at Cedarville University and was fired because the content went against the College's theological doctrine. I wanted to see what Michael wrote knowing Cedarville Universities theological doctrine that was worth being fired over. The book has made me step back, think in a positive light and process what I believe and why. I agreed with Michael's position on who God is. I liked at the beginning, page x (Preface) when Michael invites the reader to revisit Genesis and Exodus as if it were your first time. Maybe Cedarville University did not like that Michael questioned evolution and Christian faith. That is a crime to be in the same sentence isn't it? Maybe the problem is Michael refers to Genesis and Revelation as stories.
Maybe the problem with Michael's book is that in religion there are strict guidelines that do not permit the mind to explore, reexamine, question what you believe in and why? In my faith I want to be challenged, want to question for how else can I become deeper in understanding God's Word and in my faith? If that is the reason Michael W. Pahl got fired from Cedarville University God forbid if we keep studying the Bible to grow in our faith. I would love to read why Michael W. Pahl actually got fired for writing The Beginning and the End: Rereading Genesis's Stories and Revelation...
I recommend reading this book as I am glad I bought and read it. But be careful you might get fired for being curious and wanting to grow in your faith!

Western Romance At It's Best

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and a review.

Vanessa Vale has brought us another exciting tale of Western Thrill,Excitement and Romance.
This tale will have you Tantalised and wanting more and more.

Piper Sinclair has not had an easy life what with having no mother to care for her and just a father and two brothers that couldn't care less about her, she longs for a better life.

But when Piper finds herself hauled away and in jail by this handsome bounty hunter in connection with some crimes that her family committed, she thinks that the sheriff's word that she wouldn't be involved should be enough to make this stubborn bounty hunter let her go.

But Wiley Easton isn't going to buy it at all. He's heard time and time again that a woman is involved in this crime spree that has left many people including his own father dead. If the sheriff won't do anything about it then he will just have to wait till the judge arrives. He decides he will just have to keep her captive and butt naked so she can't escape him.

But everything changes when the judge shows up the next morning, he side's with the sheriff and explains to Wiley that Piper wouldn't be involved, and not only that but he is furious to find that Wiley has kept an innocent young lady naked in his hotel room. Because Piper has been so dishonoured, the judge orders Wiley to marry her and to return her honour to where it should be.

This Book is beyond amazing I loved it from the very first page I just new it was going to be a sexy page turner.

Vanessa Vale sure knows how to draw you in to her wonderful worlds she is able to create it gives us the readers an awesome opportunity to live vicariously through her characters.

Wiley is for sure a strong stubborn character he has a good heart deep down and is only doing this because they had killed his father he was seeking the justice he deserved. I loved his stubbornness how he thinks that having a wife wont change anything …. but it sure does and I think it opened his eyes to the real world as well as opening his heart to love.

Piper was my favourite for sore she has a strong nature and a passionate way about her you can tell how loyal she is and how she truly wants a new life with love in it and someone who really cares for her. I adored how she is determined to help Wiley with his case and how she is willing to risk her own life to bring justice for Wiley father and all others that lost relatives or a loved one from this awful woman.

My favourite part of the story is how Wiley awakened Pipers passion and how electric they both are together.

Sweet Justice......Sweet HOTness!

I hate to say this.....but I think this is my favorite Vanessa Vale book to date. Nothing I love better than is a man who thinks he is so smart and then that backfires on him. Mr. Easton, the hot bounty hunter thought he was so smart in finding a way to keep Piper from bolting as his prisoner by keeping her clothes and leaving her in a sheet. All is find and good until the judge shows up and is not pleased that
"Prisoner or not, a woman ca not be treated........so you have given me not choice here execpt to spare Miss Sinclair's virtue......therefore you will marry her."
I love a good shotgun wedding as well....and when the bride is married in a hotel room wearing just a bed sheet things are just getting interesting.
Great read! I would of like to info to what happened to her ranch and if now her new husband was now to get the deed? I loved the thought that they would now start on a new life on his ranch.....but would of liked to have had a few loose ends tied up a bit.

THE BOUNTY HUNTER AND THE VIRGIN

This story has a wonderful plot with interesting twists as the mystery unfolds and criminals are captured and tried. It has a great cast of characters, unique scenes for getting the job done and entertaining dialog. Sometimes what seems like an unfair situation can, in fact, be a blessing in disguise. What appears as a compromising situation of actual innocence, leads to a forced marriage but the circuit judge. This is another wonderfully told western erotica tale from Ms. Vale. Wiley Easton is a bounty hunter, looking for those responsible for the death of several people, including his father. He is after the Sinclair family. Piper Sinclair knows her father and brother are no good, she is sick of their abuse and wishes she could leave, but with their reputation, no one would hire her, she is trapped. When Wiley and his fellow bounty hunters take Piper and her family prisoner, more is captured than fugitives. The sex scenes are steamy hot, the spanking scene is mild.
