Not quite what the blurb describes. . .

This book was described as fun for kids and there was nothing about its text or layout that was age-appropriate for the range indicated. Maybe it would be a fun gag gift for accountants, but the math and the "tricks and puzzles" inside were overly complicated in both description and instruction. Also, the layout of the book was cheap and not in the least appealing visually, and the paper was cheap stock. I intended to give this book to a child who is extremely advanced in math and it was not even appropriate for him. I ended up giving it as a gag gift to the controller at the office holiday party. Definitely would not recommend this book for young people.

Epic Poverty Brilliantly Understood

I spent five years in India, the first two in Calcutta. I was appalled the first day to see fragile two wheel-rickshaws parked near my apartment corner. They were 'taxis' pulled by bare-chested, barefoot men. It took months before I climbed into one and only after my British date explained the favor we would be doing the man who pulled it. We would tip him a month's pay for our ride. He then gave me advice for future rides. Never climb into a rickshaw if you have doubts about the driver and/or he won't give you a fair price. Not many white folk used rickshaws. I was young and more in love with India with every breath. I visited many parts of Calcutta, a sprawling city of 12,000,000 people. Eventually I had a car but liked riding the rickshaws too much to give them up. I could go anywhere in the city at any hour and find a safe ride home. They took care of me. I have never felt so safe. And I have lived many places. I know some of them have to be in the pages of "The City of Joy."

"The City of Joy" is epic. I love it. It is a great book. Beautifully written. It is hard to describe its totality. So I'm not going to review it. Instead I quote from the author's " Afterward": "That very first monsoon morning I walked into it. I knew that this wretched inhuman slum of Calcutta called the City of Joy was one of the most extraordinary places on our planet. When I left it two years later with some twenty pads full of notes and hundreds of hours of tape, I knew I had the material for the greatest book of my career, an epic of heroism, love, and faith, glorious tribute to the human capacity to beat adversity and survive every possible tragedy."

"This certainly was one of the most extraordinary experiences that a writer could. It changed my life. Living with the heroic inhabitants of the City of Joy completely transformed my sense of priorities and my assessment of the true values of life."

In his Author's Note Dominique Lapierre says that we should not extend his impressions gathered in "The City of Joy" to the whole of India, that they are based on "one small corner of it--a small area of Calcutta called the City of Joy.

The City of Joy is not seen by tourists. Much better that they read Lapierre's fantastically rich empathetic description of Calcutta's sub city. and some of her poorest and most heroic. If you think you understand poverty and hardship, if you have travelled to or want to understand India better read this book.

I would like this to be a serial!!

Been following some of this writers work for a while now, and in each story we get a new display of her versatility as a writer. This time around we have a feisty and somewhat fearsome Captain Caiterina, a young woman with a troubled past, who has to struggle and kill for what she gets in life. this time around it is the command of a pirate ship.
I like the character of Caiterina. She is rough and her thick Irish brogue used to good effect to show off her fearsome character, but for all the killing and the quiet anger she also has a kind of a decent side. sometimes its hidden beneath the killing and the barking of orders at the other pirates- some of whom have their own ambitions and are quite prepared to kill too- but this duality of nature in her is juggled by the writer to good effect. never in the story does she become unlikable, yet her goodness is never overblown to the point where she becomes unbelievable as a Captain for a crew of killer pirates.
Part of Caiterina's act is balanced neatly by the entrance of Elizabeth, her captive. I cant say too much here without ruining it but I would say Elizabeth brings out the best while dispelling some of the worst of the fierce pirate Captain, all the time this needs to be hidden as carefully as possible from the cunning pirate crew.
quite an entertaining read. Don't let it go unnoticed.

Come Aboard the Black Liberty!

Shiralyn Lee definitely has talent. This time she's weaved a pirate tale lead by Captain Caiterina O'Creagh. I don't know how the author does it but I felt like I was on the high seas as one of the crew mates on the Black Liberty. Caiterina O'Creagh is a ruthless yet fair leader, taking her crew on numerous adventures. There's plenty of action and vivid description to keep the story going and there's subtle humor peppered throughout. By the end of the story we get to see a softer side of the Captain which I found endearing. Don't worry, though, despite any tenderness the Captain is still all pirate. I really enjoyed the twists that occur towards the end of the book and I was definitely curious how it would all wrap up.

The pirate speak in this story is really thick and starts from page one. It took me a few pages to get into it but once my ear became accustomed, reading the accent was easy. It definitely gave spirit to the story.

I wouldn't say there's an overarching plot conflict in the book that takes up the story; it's more that the Captain and the crew jump from opportunity to opportunity as they come across them. I didn't think this was a bad thing, though, as I wondered, "What next? What next?" The author keeps delivering in that respect and wraps it all up with some fun plot twists.

Overall, this book is a very satisfying and worthy read. Highly Recommend!

I love a pirate story

I do enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It kept me wondering what was next. Captain Caiterina is a fearsome pirate on the high seas. Killing and thieving her way through life until she meets one beautiful women. Will there love last or will they both perish? I loved this book. My heart was broken at one point. This one kept me thinking about it all day . Can't wait for the next one! If you love a good pirate story this is your book.
