About the Author
Irvin D. Yalom, M.D., is professor emeritus of psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He was the recipient of the 1974 Edward Strecker Award and the 1979 Foundation's Fund Prize in Psychiatry. He is the author of When Nietzche Wept (winner of the 1993 Commonwealth Club gold medal for fiction), Love's Executioner, Every Day Gets a Little Closer (with Ginny Elkin), and the classic textbooks Inpatient Group Psychotherapy and Existential Psychotherapy.

The Group Therapy "Bible"

No lengthy explanation needed here. I am a graduate counseling psychology student with a particular interest and experience in groups. We refer to this particular Yalom book as the group therapy "bible," since it pretty much contains everything you could ever need to know about the basics of running therapy (and even support) groups. This is one of very few books I've had to read for school that I actually couldn't STOP reading--it's that good. My professor for this course has been doing groups for over 20 years and says she still refers back to this book for insight when leading her groups. Also check out Yalom's book on existential therapy! There is some case study overlap with the group book, but it's another favorite. And don't let the size of this book intimidate you. You won't be able to put it down! Yalom is the man . . . Happy reading!

Timeless

Yalom's techniques are timeless, as long as human nature and how it plays out in social interactions transcends time and place. Thus, decades after publication, this book of group therapy lives on, whereas others, more faddish, are either narrowly focused on sufferers of the "disease of the year", or, in the case of "pragmatic", short-term "manual-based" groups which insurance companies favor, assume that all one has to do is give the patient the right recipe and 8 weeks to practice it, and they'll be cured of life-long ingrained pathological behaviors.
Anyone who thinks this book is "out of touch" or demonstrates a lack of empathy by Yalom, probably has a pet style of group therapy, and an axe to grind. Often, seemingly more empathic therapists, run groups in which everyone takes turns getting sympathy, distress is "validated", whereas the patient's contribution to it is ignored, and the premise is that sufferers are misunderstood victims of a neglected disease who are finally in the hands of someone who "gets it". Usually therapists who lead such groups, don't only wish to empathize, but are driven by a wish to feed their own vision of their specialness as the champions of the underdogs.
One of Yalom's greatest contributions is the effectiveness with which he used the group approach to exactly show patients how they cause their own distress--by creating a group atmosphere in which members play out their poor social skills, and get the powerful impact of peer feedback on this. He did so in a way which demonstrated genuine empathy in action: by steering members to identify (and empathize) not only with each others' misery, but with each others' strengths. Sympathy without a kick in the [...], is patronizing, and implies inequality. Sympathy with a kick in the [...] (always best given by peers), is sympathy with belief in your power--this shows respect for all of you, your strengths and your miseries. THIS is empathy. THIS is what empowers group members to overcome their problems. And this truth, will never go out of date.

The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy

This book is one that every graduate student in psychology or beginning therapist should read and have on their shelf. Yalom covers and discusses many important aspects of group therapy such as interpersonal learning, basic thearpist tasks, the idea of working in the here-and-now, therapist transference and transparency, selection of patients, creating a group, problem patients and training the group therapist. Yalom addresses this book to new therapists just starting out, as well as therapists who have been in the field for some time. Yalom presents the new therapist with the many considerations that need to be looked at when forming a group and actually leading a group and he assists the therapists who have been in the field for some time with ways in which to sharpen or improve their skills. Yalom's book appears to be based on highly functioning upper middle class individuals who seem to have good jobs and relationships with their family, friends and spouses. One may gather this assumption from the clinical vignettes and cases that Yalom presents throughout the entire book. Yalom incorporates much of his own practical experience with individuals in the groups that he has led himself, which makes his book feel like you are reading a novel and not a textbook per se. Although Yalom based his book on highly functioning upper middle class individuals, he never addressed the idea of group therapy with children or individuals of different ethnic backgrounds, which seem to be two important areas in today's society, especially within the realm of therapy. Yalom incorporates a rigorous research base within his text, such as discussing some of the current treatment modes and the diagnostic criteria for managed care, which other authors tend to maybe leave out or not touch upon, in essence leading the reader to believe that what Yalom speaks about is true, factual and practical when referring to group therapy. Although Yalom conducted an extensive amount of research on the area of managed care, I do not think it is possible for an individual to be covered by a managed health care or insurance company for a group that is conducted over a one to two year period, as Yalom presents in some of his clinical vignettes. One thing that I think Yalom has done that other authors have not is present the reader with twelve variables that he refers to as "therapeutic factors," (i.e. instillation of hope, universality, altruism, and group cohesiveness) which in essence are the driving tools and elements that assist therapy groups with rectifying individual character distortions. Yalom's book assisted our graduate psychology class in gaining an immense amount of insight and depth into the area of group therapy in such a short amount of time. Yalom's book is one that should be included in all graduate programs in psychology!

A great overview

This book is a great overview for those who are interested in the complexities of the human personality. I would recommend this book to people who would feel as though they can connect with the subject matter and would like to know more details about the topic. This book is also a great resource for writers who are looking to make their characters a bit more complex and would like to do some research before assigning character traits to their personalities. I enjoyed the author's personal touch to his writing, as this makes it more meaningful and less of a textbook-like piece of writing. I would love to hear more personal stories from people who have been "diagnosed" with each personality disorder.

Discredits itself

I bought this to assist in practicing short story writing. I wanted a baseline general idea of different psychological issues. Anything I discovered I could use with a character, I planned to research further. The book starts with a disclaimer that it's based mostly on personal experience. (The author needs new friends.) How to tell if you're dating someone with borderline personality disorder. Really? Useful for my stories, but I don't see how that would really help a typical person seeking answers. The book seriously discredits itself with all the type-os, grammatical errors, and there are complete words missing from sentences! How can I believe something as important as mental health issues when they can't even proof read their work? I just got the book and sat last night skipping through reading here and there. Not one section I read was without simple errors. That makes me question the accuracy of the entire book. A huge disappointment.

About the Author

Barry M. McCoy is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at C.N.Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, at the State University of New York. He took his PhD at Harvard University in 1967, and has since had various positions, including the Editorial Board of the Ramanujan Journal, the Editorial Board of Journal of Physics A, Resident at the Bellagio Conference and Study Center of the Rockefeller Foundation, and Miller Professor at University of California at Berkeley. In 1999 he won the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics.

This religious thriller alternates briskly between present-day New York City and Jerusalem and scenes set in the time of the Crusades in France, Toledo and regions near Constantinople that feature Tobias Garlande, a scholar who has visions of the future and is revealed to be connected to Father Flannery. Back in the future, Father Flannery learns he is being targeted by an ancient religious order that doesn't want him to share his message of faith with the world. Although the dialogue is lamentable and some early antics involving computer hacking are hackneyed at best, the authors show a good grasp of the variety of various religious traditions and histories that underpin this series, even if the faith elements are a bit heavy-handed. In 2007, coauthors Block and Vaughan (the latter is a prolific novelist, not the well-known actor) published The Masada Scroll, which concerned discovery of an unknown gospel predating those of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. That novel’s hero is Father Michael Flannery, who decodes a mysterious symbol contained in the gospel, only to have the scroll stolen by Via Dei, an ancient sect determined to keep the scroll’s message from being divulged to the world. Now Via Dei has embarked on a series of assassinations designed to keep Flannery and others silent forever. The authors tell two stories here: the modern-day account of Flannery’s attempts to stay out of Via Dei’s clutches, and the eleventh-century story of Tobias Garlande, a French scholar whose visions may foretell future events. Religious-conspiracy thrillers were a dime a dozen even before The Da Vinci Code; now they’re a penny a dozen, and most of them are hastily produced, and painful to read. This one, while no great work of literature, is solidly written and imaginative, with a story line that delivers the goods. --David Pitt

This sequel to "The Masada Scroll" is terrific! As implicity promised in the first book, this second volume continues the larger story of what spiritual faith of any stripe should really be about. Once again, the authors enrich the telling by framing their tale in a double viewpoint context--one contemporary and one in the historical past; this time, readers travel back to the Middle Ages and Crusades. Through it all, the book's primary protagonist, Father Flannery, now himself a Keeper of the Sign, finds he is under constant threat from powerfully entrenched religious groups with a very great deal to lose if he accomplishes his prime directive--revealing the newly discovered Masada gospel of unity and peace to the entire world. Throughout, the authors keep the reader on chair's edge; both are master thriller/suspense story-tellers and once again with "Armor of God," they do not disappoint. all the way through to the last page.

fast-paced religious thriller

Though at times he feels the weight of the world upon him, forty-seven years old Father Michael Flannery knows faith and his mission for God keeps him going. He is the Keeper of the Sign that somehow combines the Star of David, the Cross of Christianity and the Crescent and Star of Islam before any of these symbols have been known to have existed.

He knows the consolidated symbol represents the Trevia Dei paths to God. He continues his work to bring peace and harmony through the recently stolen Gospel of Dismayas that predates the four accepted Gospels. Many fanatics from each major religion want him dead as he preaches any path to God not one intrusive way. On his way to give a talk in New York, a Via Dei assassin tries to kill him to keep him from preaching the earliest known gospel; one that has been contradicted ever since.

This fast-paced religious thriller also contains a subplot involving the Crusades starring a scholar Tobias Garlande, who sees the future which adds depth and excitement, but this is Father Flannery's tale. The story line is fast-paced from the onset as assassins try to kill the hero to prevent him getting the word out. Although at times the language feels stilted, fans will relish the sequel to THE MASADA SCROLL as Paul Block and Robert Vaughan provide an intriguing look at the three major monotheistic religions in which a gospel of peace and harmony is unacceptable to the powerful who need the masses conflicted to maintain their affluent position on earth.

About the Author

Jennifer Davis is a global organizer for devopsdays and a local organizer for devopsdays Silicon Valley, and the founder of Coffeeops. She supports a number of community meetups in the San Francisco area. In her role at Chef, Jennifer develops Chef cookbooks to simplify building and managing infrastructure. She has spoken at a number of industry conferences about devops, tech culture, monitoring, and automation. When she’s not working, she enjoys hiking Bay Area trails, learning to make things, and spending quality time with her partner, Brian, and her dog, George.

Katherine Daniels is a senior operations engineer working at Etsy. She has taken her love of automation and operations and turned it into a specialization in monitoring, configuration management, and operational tooling development, and has spoken at numerous industry conferences including Velocity, devopsdays, and Monitorama about subjects such as infrastructure automation, scaling monitoring solutions, and cultural change in engineering. Katherine is one of the co-organizers of devopsdays NYC and helps run Ladies Who Linux in New York. She lives in Brooklyn with a perfectly reasonable number of cats, and in her spare time enjoys playing cello, rock climbing, and brewing beer.

Not quite what I expected, but useful nevertheless

The subtitle says it all. This book has an extremely strong emphasis on the cultural aspects for creating an atmosphere suitable for the development of a solid devops practice. It has a liberal focus on the presumed importance of team (and workforce) diversity (ethnic background, race, gender, sexuality, age, etc.) and its centrality to creating a devops culture. This belief sets the mood of the entire book, from the topics, to the tone, to the writing style. Its difficult to find a page where this theme isn't drilled home in one way or another - sometimes plainly, sometimes more subtlety. For example, there is a sidebar section describing the personal challenges of a deaf (female) developer. While the story was surely interesting, I couldn't help but feel that it was out of place. This kind of thing is everywhere in this book, to the point of being distracting.

If you are expecting advice or direction on hardcore tooling or technology, this is definitely not the book for you. It is much more in line with HR and management-themed books on building diverse teams, handling conflicts, building collaboration, and then applying everything at scale. The authors even point out that people might be surprised by the apparent lopsided emphasis, especially when compared to just about every book in this space. You could change the word "Devops" in the title to just about any corporate practice you wanted to and much of the book could stay as is.

The authors make a strong and compelling case for devops as a cultural change - for them it is far less about the tools, processes, and technologies associated - it's about the people. This rings true with my own experiences in this space. However, I do not believe they made the case for such a strong emphasis on diversity as a requirement for success in that change. This premise so strongly permeates the book that one wonders if they were trying to convince themselves of its centrality. It's as if they believe a typical IT organization (which they point out is staffed mostly by white, cisgender males) couldn't possible be successful at making the cultural transformation.

Still, the down-to-earth tips they present are tried-and-true. I found the chapter on collaboration particularly useful. All-in-all it's a practical, worthy addition to your bookshelf.

A Great Read for Managers and Team Leads Wanting To Understand How To Embrace The DevOps Culture

Interesting read. I purchased the hardcopy and Kindle version (God - I wish you could just pay once!) since it was a decent read. This book is written from a manager level. It covers a ton of human resources things, which I found very odd for an O'Riley book. As far as DevOps goes - there is nothing that really teaches you DevOps. It shows the culture, explains it, but there is no real hands on, get into the weeds type of explanations here. If you want to really get your hands on a great DevOps book, read "The DevOps 2.0 Toolkit" - which will have you sitting in front of your laptop for the next two weeks, as it is filled with step by step exercises that enable you to build an entire CI/CD environment.

This book really focuses on how to develop the culture of DevOps, and how to develop that culture with various types of people. I think it is worth reading if you are a manager that is toying with the idea of DevOps and understanding how to work with your team. I don't think this is a book that most O'Riley fans will appreciate as the technical and application pieces seem to be lacking.

Learn about actual DevOps, not tech toys

I was confused about why so many reviewers view the title as misleading, or the content as not technical enough. This just shows you how diluted terms get by technical marketing departments trying to sell you their wares.

The book itself best summarizes what DevOps actually is: "a professional and cultural movement that stresses the iterative efforts to break down information silos, monitor relationships, and repair misunderstandings that arise between teams within an organization."

It's about culture, it's about practice, process, beliefs, and tooling... to run IT services with increased agility and reliability. This is of enormous importance to fix our widespread broken siloed organizations and processes, to form a culture of mutual respect and trust even at scale. The highest performing organizations can do this, this book provides a practical set of questions, answers, and stories to help your team on this journey.

This book is fabulous! It's easy to read. It's interestingly told. The whole book is scattered wonderful little vingnettes which make it easy to remember who is who and the whole book is actually a great overview of the history of the period! Very worth reading!!

About the Author

C. M. Charles, PhD. is Professor Emeritus of Teacher Education, San Diego State University, Honorary Phi Beta Kappa, was a public school teacher from 1953 to 1959, then moved into higher education. He has held positions at the University of New Mexico, Teachers College Columbia University, Pepperdine University, Universidade Federal do Maranhao (Brazil), and of course, San Diego State University. At San Diego State, Charles directed innovative programs in teacher education, and five times received outstanding professor and distinguished teaching awards. He also served on several occasions as advisor in teacher education and curriculum to the governments of Peru and Brazil. Charles has authored or co-authored numerous books, most of them in education, that have attracted wide audiences in the United States and abroad, with translations into several foreign languages. Rented this as a text book. It walks through the history of classroom discipline and explores the basis for each one. I wouldn't say it was compelling reading, but certainly did it's job while staying fairly concise and to the point without leaving out necessary details.
