Language driving me mad and only on Ch3...

Stuck on chapter 3 as its already annoying me with really strange language choices - like the niece of the main character is in 'fifth year of senior infants' - what's that? Is it fifth class? Call it fifth class then. The main character calls her brother in law a 'good police officer' - is this set in Ireland or not? If it is, he's a guard or a Garda. The main character goes home to Cork but somehow manages to look out at the Irish Sea in her home town. The Irish Sea is between Ireland and Britain- she must have been in a rocket to see that from the Cork coastline. Don't know if I can continue with 6+ hours of this kind of stuff annoying me when there are so many great books out there...

More romance than suspense

Not sure why this was advertised as a "gripping, psychological drama". It was basically a romance novel with some family conflicts. The author tries to create suspense by having virtually everyone say "I have a secret" but it doesn't come off as suspenseful. The ending is fairly obvious early on, and I kept wishing the author would just get it over with already

How dare they call this a 'gripping' psychological novel? It was boring and dragged along and disappointed at the end. I kept waiting for it to become a psychological thriller which never happened and the ending was downright sappy.

Dr DINH-VAN NGUYEN graduated from Medical School, University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) in 1980. From 1980 to 1990, he was instructor of Ben-Tre Middle School of Health, physician-in-Chief of Tinh-Bien District Hospital, and anesthesiologist of Central General Hospital of An-Giang province (Vietnam). Immigrated to Canada in 1991, he was retrained and got a diploma of Respiratory and Anesthesia Technology from Vanier College (Quebec) in 1995, and BScN from University of Ottawa (Ontario) in 2000. Working in the Ottawa Hospital (2000-2002) then with VON Ottawa and Carefor Health & Community Services (2002-2016). Certified member of the Canadian Vascular Access Association since 2012.

A dedicated inventor, Alvin has a way of making things work, sometimes to the menace of people and property. His eight-year-old sister, 'the Pest', adores him, and together they set out to employ some of Alvin's inventions while trying to uncover a crime and the criminals. The victim, a kindly old woman, is immensely grateful to Alvin's mechanical ability when she is saved from a plot instigated by a ne'er do-well nephew, by one of Alvin's most intricate devices. There is no doubt that he has cut the corners of well-defined child deportment, but with his characteristic good will and intelligence, he emerges a town hero. OUTSTANDING!

This is the first title in an outstanding series of Alvin books by Clifford Hicks. Sadly, they all seem to be out of print.
The Alvin books were my favorites as a kid. I checked them out from the library repeatedly and devoured them. As a 10 year old, I wanted to hang out with Alvin and Shoey. The books are full of laughs, adventure, and great storytelling. They take us back to small town America, before kids had to deal with grownup problems.
If you have a kid, buy this book for him. Buy it used, buy it on Ebay, buy it at a used bookstore! The other titles (all very good) in the series are ALVIN'S SECRET CODE, ALVIN'S SWAP SHOP, ALVIN FERNALD FOREIGN TRADER, ALVIN FERNALD MAYOR FOR A DAY, and ALVIN FERNALD SUPERWEASEL. All are great. Another great series if you like the Alvin books is the Mad Scientists Club books by Bertrand Brinley. Check them out.

The Marvelous Inventions of Arnold Fernald

I am 45 years old... my 44 year old brother came over and talked about how this book changed his life. He read it as a kid and became an inventor of sorts himself... a perpetual tinkerer. He wasn't sure of the name and I found it for him and ordered him a copy as well as my 9 year old son. It took some insistance to get by boy, Nick, to read it. He couldn't put it down and when my brother came over to visit he quized Nick on select parts of the book. They both smiled and laughed. Having read it myself I can tell you it is a most wonderful book. Buy it! Your kid will remember it always.

Surely, one of the best kid's books ever written!

Alvin Fernald in "The Marvelous Inventions of Alvin Fernald" gives us the character we've been wanting to see for a long time. No pretentious, Einstein-like, nauseating child characters as are so often found in children's books today. The words "believable" and "energized" fit this character and this book. Alvin is entertaining, hilarious and inventive. This book is REFRESHING. Kids are free from dealing with divorce, AIDS, broken promises, puberties-gone-bad and all the other bibliotherapy themes that seem to permeate the current books for children. Not that those aren't important, but this one is a time-out from seriousness, and is a roller coaster ride, a non-stop comedy routine, and a mystery which actually develops in a BELIEVABLE manner. It is such REFRESHING FUN. The story line is so adeptly crafted by its author, Clifford B. Hicks, a talented writer of much expertise and experience. Books like this separate the usual books that have plagued the children's market for the last several years by formula hack writers from those written by truly talented children's writers, like Clifford B. Hicks. It's such a relief to read something so enjoyable and so NOT-FORMULA. Single this book out for your children and leave the over-used theme, big yawn books to others less discriminating. This book is SPECIAL. Give YOUR kid's their childhood's back with "The Marvelous Inventions of Alvin Fernald."

Good book for beginners

I am enjoying the book and learning a lot. However, I have the Kindle version and many of the charts and tables are un-readable in this format, and there are a lot of them. If you are thinking about purchasing this book I would recommend the hard-cover version so you can read the charts and tables.

Good for an overview

It doesn't give you a complete LSS education but that would be too much to ask for from a "For Dummies" book. It gives a very good overview of the important concepts and it directs you to resources where you can learn more. There is a lot of statistical analysis involved in LSS and the book doesn't include too much related to that. If you want a broad overview of the concepts or you're looking to review, then this is a great resource. If you're looking for the complete story on LSS then you should take a class or at least get some more detailed textbooks. But if you don't want to spend a ton of money then this is good enough.

An honest account of success and failure

The author describes how she has followed her passion, photography, while developing a more steady stream of income than she was able to make as a freelance photographer doing weddings, senior portraits etc... This is her account of the different things she has tried. What worked and what didn't. It gives an insight into the incredible amount of work, patience, perseverance and thick skin required to get such a venture off the ground. If youv'e ever considered making a living using the internet and social media than this is a great read.

Great 1st Run!

I have been following SnapChick, or Brittany pretty much ever since she embarked with SnapChick.com.
What can I say, The book was awesome! You writing ir not bad at all, and I enjoyed it. I am now going to become a VIP after I get my checks in the bank. This is worth the buy 100%. I started just like SnapChick, nothing but a passion for photography.

Remarkably Frank and Refreshing

I stumbled upon my first Snapchick video quite by accident, a few days ago. I had read on NikonRumors that the Nikon V1 was being sold by B&H for just $299. The camera had always intrigued me, even at the $800 or $900 original price, but when the V2 came out, it seemed like they were just dumping the old V1's, so now I had to really investigate. I searched YouTube and one of the few (why so few?) full reviews for the V1 was the Snapchick's. I have watched hundreds of photo related videos over the years, ThatNikonGuy, Digital Rev, FroKnowsPhoto, The Camera Store, etc. I found it odd that I had never stumbled upon one of the SnapChick's video's until now. I still don't know why.

Anyway, as I watched SnapChick's V1 video review, I could feel her infectious enthusiasm for the little V1 "that packs a big punch", or something like that. I was hooked, and proceeded to watch many of her videos. Yes, the SnapChick is pretty and fit, but pretty, fit girls are a dime a dozen. They are everywhere. No, it is what is between Brittany Leigh's ears, not in front of them or below them, that makes her brand of video review unique. I was intrigued.

I've been thinking of making some art related videos, as a P.R. device, more than a direct revenue generator, for YouTube and I figured if I could learn just one or two things, this inexpensive book would be worth it to me. Ms. Leigh stresses, in her casual, play full writing style, the importance of "being real". She explains the importance of personally addressing and responding to mountains of comments and emails. She acknowledges that it is important to "use what you got", in her case, playing up her appearance.

What most surprised me was her intuitive/schooled knowledge of economics. Personally, I found this casual, logical "analysis" very fun and enjoyable to read. Lastly, there is her frank discussion of dealing with haters, criticism and the like. I can't help thinking that Leigh has a very sensitive and sometimes depressed side, though she always acts upbeat and confident in her comments and videos. She's got spunk and smarts and it comes through in her book. I wish her continued success and I hope she has the stamina and fortitude to press on. She obviously thinks a lot, experiments a lot, and works "wicked hard", as we say in Boston.

It is a brief, inexpensive, but very honest book - up to date too. Oh speaking of honest, Ms. Leigh even shares her exact, quite limited, sales numbers, in terms of the VIP members that signed up each month. This is remarkably frank and refreshing. I've never read anything quite like it. If you have an interest in business in general, or possibly in starting your own internet, i.e. social media, based business, I would say it is definitely worth the time to take in this very brief read.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, I did buy the Nikon V1 and I love it!

Soon, she is secretly gliding through the water as a mermaid. Below the waves, she meets Shona, also 12, who takes her to mermaid school and leads her on several adventures. When Emily learns the intriguing history of the Shiprock community and of illegal marriages between humans and merpeople, she begins to look for her merman father. Danger, humor, confrontation, and even a trial before Neptune all play a part in her search. Eventually, she finds her dad and comes to understand the truth about her oddly controlling neighbor, Mr. Beeston; her mother's dislike of water; and her parents' love affair. All ends well when the family is reunited and swims away to live a new life on a secret merfolk island. This fantasy has some delightful moments, but not enough to keep it afloat. Gr. 4-7. This first novel opens with a classic teaser: "Can you keep a secret?" It turns out that the secret is a particularly juicy one. Though outwardly a normal seventh-grader, Emily Windsnap transforms into a mermaid when she goes swimming. The phenomenon worries her but thrills her, too, especially when she discovers an underwater "mer-city" not far from where she lives, and begins to learn the answers to nagging questions about her origins: Why did her father abandon her when she was a baby? Why can't her mother remember details about her husband? After a new mermaid friend mentions "illegal marriages" between mer-people and humans, readers will guess where things are headed--long before Emily herself does. Emily's eventual reunion with her merman father seems overly reliant on luck and coincidence, but her determination keeps things cruising along, and the premise of someone slipping easily into a shimmery underwater world has considerable allure. Got a set finally!

My daughter loved this book we got a whole set! She needs to read at least 20 mins a day but she spends more time reading this and less time on electronics now. She would tell me what she read so far over breakfast before she goes to school.

A fun crazy adventure

I am going to tell you about the setting of The Tail of Emily Windsnap. The setting took place on a ship called King of the Sea and I think that is an interesting name for a ship. Most of the setting is either on the ship or in the ocean and the author described the setting very well. I could almost imagine myself in the setting of this story. The setting of The Tail of Emily Windsnap is very creative and amazing.
I can tell you a lot about the plot of this story. A girl named Emily finds out she is half mermaid at the beginning of the story when she swims for the first time and I think that it would be awesome to find out you were half mermaid. I found it very interesting when Emily met a mermaid named Shannon and learned about her dad at mermaid school. She goes through a great and crazy adventure to find her dad who is a mermaid also. I loved the plot of The Tail of Emily Windsnap.
I am going to tell you the conflict and resolution of The Tail of Emily Windsnap. I thought it was surprising when Emily found out her dad was a mermaid, and was in prison and that was a problem. She is half mermaid and mermaid prison is very far away, so she would have to swim underwater, which I think would be crazy because she would not be able to swim that long and far. So Emily, her mom, and Mr. Beeston went into the ocean on a ship, so Emily could jump out of the ship when they were far enough, and go through a difficult adventure to save her dad. Emily went through a crazy adventure just to save her dad.

I bought the entire set of the Emily Windsnap books for my 10 year old niece as a birthday gift. She loves mermaids and loved the books.

About the Author

Dr. Myron W. (Ron) Lustig is a renowned teacher, writer, scholar, and researcher. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, he had a distinguished career as a professor of communication at San Diego State University (SDSU). He is now an emeritus professor at SDSU, a past president of the Western States Communication Association (WSCA), and a recent recipient of WSCA’s Distinguished Service Award, its highest honor. He is a former editor of Communication Reports and is currently on the editorial boards of several intercultural communication journals. His teaching and research interests include intercultural, group, and interpersonal communication theories, methods, and processes. Dr. Lustig has written 9 books or book revisions, over 30 scholarly research articles, and numerous conference papers. During several recent spring semesters, he has gained additional practical and theoretical lessons about Intercultural Competence while teaching intercultural communication to undergraduate and graduate students at Shanghai International Studies University.

Dr. Jolene Koester was president of California State University, Northridge, one of the largest and most diverse campuses in the 23-campus California State University system, from 2000-2011. Under her leadership, the University improved graduation and retention rates, created a user-friendly campus, strengthened connections with the community, and increased fundraising. She also worked to make the University more learning-centered and focused on student success. Known nationally for her leadership in higher education, she currently serves on the board of directors of NAFSA, an association of international educators. She is also a past chair of the Board of Directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, a former president of the Western States Communication Association, and remains active in issues related to higher education access and leadership. After earning a Ph.D. in speech communication from the University of Minnesota, she began her academic career as a professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, and served in a variety of administrative positions there, including provost and vice president for academic affairs, prior to her appointment as president of Cal State Northridge.
