About the Author

Frede Blaabjerg was at ABB-Scandia, Randers, Denmark, from 1987 to 1988. From 1988 to 1992, he was a Ph.D. Student with Aalborg University, Aalborg, Denmark. He became an Assistant Professor in 1992, an Associate Professor in 1996, and a Full Professor of power electronics and drives in 1998. His current research interests include power electronics and its applications (such as in wind turbines), PV systems, reliability, harmonics, and adjustable speed drives. He has received 17 IEEE Prize Paper Awards, the IEEE PELS Distinguished Service Award in 2009, the EPE-PEMC Council Award in 2010, the IEEE William E. Newell Power Electronics Award 2014 and the Villum Kann Rasmussen Research Award 2014. Professor Blaabjerg was an Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS from 2006 to 2012. He has been Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2005 to 2007 and for the IEEE Industry Applications Society from 2010 to 2011. In 2014, he was nominated by Thomson Reuters to be one of the 250 most cited researchers in Engineering in the world. Professor Blaabjerg has published more than 300 journal publications in the field.

Dan M. Ionel is Professor of Electrical Engineering and the L. Stanley Pigman Chair in Power at University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY. He previously worked in industry, most recently as Chief Engineer for Regal Beloit Corp., and, before that, as the Chief Scientist for Vestas Wind Turbines. Concurrently with his industrial appointments, Professor Ionel also served as Visiting and Research Professor at University of Wisconsin and Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. He contributed to technology developments with long lasting industrial impact, including US’ most successful range of PM motor drives and the world’s most powerful wind turbine. He published more than one hundred and fifty technical papers, including three winners of IEEE Best Paper Awards, and holds more than thirty patents, including a medal winner at the Geneva Invention Fair. An IEEE Fellow, he was the inaugural Chair of the IEEE Industry Applications Society Renewable and Sustainable Energy Conversion Systems Committee, Editor of IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, and Technical Program Chair for IEEE ECCE 2015. He is the General Chair of the IEEE 2017 IEMDC Conference and the Editor-in-Chief of the Electric Power Components and Systems Journal.

A prolific writer of both scholarly and popular books, N. T. In addition to his many books, Wright reaches a broad audience through his frequent media appearances. Having said that, I must say that even the beginners are encouraged by the straightforward way the questions are posed and therefore no one is left feeling "lost in translation". Basic Study

I like the question and answer format and the book length. But some of the questions are pretty basic, more like you'd see in a Sunday School worksheet. I wish it would go more in depth to the Scriptures and then have more life application style questions appropriate for group discussion. It's a good format for a study to do with a group (which we did.) But I wanted to learn more than I felt like I did. I wanted deeper.

This book breaks down the chapters and verses well. However, a lot of the questions are basic and have you just refer to the verse for the easy answer. Good for new groups to study but doesn't go too deep.

This is one of my favorites--very beautiful and a blessing to chant :) It is very helpful to learn with this book Sri Suktam with Samputita Sri Suktam I have heard Amma recommend chanting Samputita Sri Suktam with devtion once a day in the morning while the sun rises. It is to honor Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi who grants both spiritual and material prosperity. It is a part of my morning sadhana/practice and truly fills my Heart--Thank you, Amma!

Learning Sri Suktam

Those who have attended the meetings of spiritual guru Sri Karunamayi Vijayeswari Devi have experienced her radiance. Prayers and stotrams chanted by "Amma" are played before the meetings to enhance the devotional atmosphere. Amma is an excellent singer and speaker. In her Sri Suktam book she uses the beautiful analogy of building a sculpture of the Goddess with the physical sounds of rendering the Suktam. The sculpture looks better each time one makes it, eventually attaining near-perfection.

The correct pronunciations of words can be listened to in Amma's music CD. Each time, the aspirant learns and internalizes the meter, words and correct pronunciation along with the meaning. Eventually the aspirant can improve the chant to a near-flawless quality.

"Spilled Ink"

Suminagashi is a technique of decorating a sheet of paper with ink patterns floating on the surface of water. It differs from Western marbling in (1) the type of ink used, and (2) the thickening of the water. Western style marbling uses carrageenan, a seaweed product, to thicken the water so that the pigments remain on the surface of the water rather than sinking.

Nothing is known about when suminagashi began to be produced in Japan. There are no records of its invention, but there are some marbled papers that date from the twelfth century. The techniques for making suminagashi decorative papers have been passed down as a strictly guarded secret of a single family. The down-side of this kind of living preservation of such arts is that over the centuries they become stereotyped and repetitious. Today there are artists who have developed their own techniques independently. It would probably be safe to say that more suminagashi cloth than suminagashi paper is produced in today's Japan, particularly as kimono panels, no one of which can be reproduced exactly.

The first five chapters of this book are taken up with history and examples of the work of four of the artists who have developed their own techniques independently. Chapter 6, Suminagashi for the Western World, gives quite detailed descriptions and drawings of equipment and supplies needed, as well as drawings and directions for carrying out the process. There is also a list of sources of materials, which might well be out of date, given the copyright date of 1991.

Learning Suminagashi

I fell in love with the technique of Suminagashi. There are numerous videos on YouTube but not too many answers to go along with the vids. This book is excellent. There is actually very little written info out there. Suminagashi is the art of floating specific ink on water and then printing it to paper or fabric. Actually a marbling technique but without the mess. Just need ink, water, pan and paper. Use of black ink alone with delicate manipulation of the pattern by blowing on the surface of the water, produces a beautiful design. Colors can be used and the size of the print is limited only by your imagination and how big a piece of paper or fabric you can actually handle, with or without help. Some control by the artist but much more serendipity involved than with traditional marbling. Traditional marbling came from the mid-east around Turkey but Suminagashi comes from Japan. Lots of history included in this book. Sumi ink and India ink can both be used.

A Japanese form of marbled papers

Even the name, 'spilled ink,' has a Japanese sense of self-deprecation about it. Don't be fooled: this simple and elegant art deserves the most serious respect.

Western marbling uses a thickened medium to support the inks. Suminagashi, instead, relies on the fluidity of water's surface to create its delicate drifting marks. It differs from Western marbling also in that it tends towards a limited palette, often being executed with black ink only. The results, however, go far past the Western style in delicacy and complexity. Suminagashi can fill the paper with marks as vivid and dense as marbled paper's. It can also create airy, open patterns as pale as morning mist, the kind that sit well under calligraphy or drawing.

Best of all, suminagashi is simpler in tools, materials, and process than its Western relative. You can try it yourself with only a shallow pan, ink, and a little detergent. Even kids can get good results within their first few tries, and get enough different results to hold their interest.

The basic simplicity of the craft takes nothing away from the masterworks of the craft's finest artisans. There is infinite subtlety in the play of ink and surface. The samples shown here are breathtaking. The book's value, though is in letting you create images of your own.

Go ahead. It's quite an experience seeing the films of ink forming on the water; it's almost magical to capture them on paper for yourself.
