There isn't a greater book on the sermon introduction. Ever.

Wow.
As a matter of disclaimer and so you can judge whether or not I am qualified to earn your favorable response to my endorsement, I think Bryan Chappell's "Christ-Centered Preaching", and Martin Lloyd-Jones' "Preaching and Preachers" are the two best books on the whole of preaching available. I consider them of the Wal-Mart variety with regards to preaching...you can find all you need in those, but they contain no specialties.
I firmly believe once those are read, you must dig out books that specialize and expound upon specific parts of the sermon (i.e, introduction, body, application, conclusion...for example), and you have to have a healthy habit of reading plenty of sermons to synthesize your understanding of the application of these works to preaching. Oh, and you must preach.
For the sermon introduction, there isn't a greater book than this. I have read plenty. Not only do you get the anatomy of the four parts of an incredible sermon introduction, but you get the variety of application to different texts, examples to use, and even suggestions for when you are preaching a series of sermons on the same topic.
Since I have read this, the reception to the introductions of my sermons (I preach 46 times a year as a pastor) has been impacted tremendously. I cannot recommend this book enough. A gem.

The Most Helpful Book I Have Found on How to Grab and Keep Attention for Preaching

In his introductory chapter, Hostetler quotes Fredrick Buechner who explains that during the introduction the preacher has the congregation “in the palm of his hand” but that “two minutes from now he may have lost his listeners completely to their own thoughts”(11). This is why the introduction to a message is so important and thus the raison d’être for this helpful book.
After dealing with making contact in chapter two, the author teaches how the introduction should start with the secular (world that people live in) but in such a way that the secular is spiced up (chapters 3-4). Then the message is to move to the Word of God (chapter 5). If the pastor is giving a series, he explains how an introduction to a number of messages linked together might be given (chapter 6). Then chapter 7 deals with the importance of personal contact being made in the introduction and chapter 8 explains how to move from the introduction to the main thought and development of the message.
I have not found a better resource than this book for grabbing the interest of the auditors and then moving them in the proper direction still keeping their attention as one moves to the main message. The advantage is that it is a short book (89 pages) and yet accomplishes its purpose. Pastors, read it and learn how to have what Hostetler calls “compelling beginnings.”

Great book for Pastors

I purchased a copy of this book years ago and found it to be very beneficial. I "loaned" my copy and it was never returned. So I purchased this one a a replacement because I want to have it in my personal library. I refer to it from time to time to help ensure that I am maintaining excellence in introducing homilies.
